Jimmy's Story

During the summer of 1976 until winter of 1981 boxing was my passion. I was obsessed with training to the point where it took it's toll on my body. I use to train so hard that in the course of 2 and a half hours I would lose 12 pounds of water!! And this was when I was 165 pounds!! I would come in and weigh myself before training at 168 pounds and 3 hours later I would weigh out at 156 I used to torture myself usually in the summer time with the heat in the Gym being over 100 degrees. This was at Floyd Pattersons camp in New Paltz New York during the 70s and early 80s. This mentality as I learned in later years most likley hurt me. At the time I could not understand why after training so hard I would feel sluggish the next day. It blows my mind to think back to the times of running to Dug road, about 2 miles at a 5 and half minute mile clip. I remember going into a zone, an all out sprint the last half mile and being utterly totally gasping for air to the point of collapse. Then up the driveway of Floyds Camp Shadowbox 10 rounds, Heavy bag 13 rounds!! Absolutely crazy this many rounds when training in amatures! I have had very few fights to where I was peaked and felt best. Usually my fights I felt weak or weaker then I should have felt due to the extreme training. One fight in particular comes to mind out of the 113 amature fights I have had. It was at the Downtown Athletic club in New York city 1979.My opponet Micheal Martinez won the 165 open class that same year I lost in the semi final round of same division in a disputed decision to an opponet I should have KOed in the first round. When I fought Martinez a few months earlier we went toe to toe the entire three rounds. It was truly an incredible fight. The last 30 seconds of the fight Martinez got tired and I swarmed on him. It was a mixture of my conditioning and adrenaline which made me peak th...Expand for more
at particular night. I realized if I could have felt like this at every fight I undoubtedly would have been undefeated in all my fights! I felt so strong and energetic. As soon as the bell rang I knew it was a special feeling I had. The energy I had was incredible.I won a decision almost stopping Martinez. I had many other fights after Martinez but sadly no matter how hard I trained I was never able to attain that same feeling again. I reflect back quite often as it was an incredible time in my life. All those days and nights hitch hiking 25 miles each way to Floyds gym. One day I would love to go see what Floyds gym looks like now. I have heard it is in disrepair from being closed so many years now which kind of saddens me as the memories and experiences I've had there were the best in my life! Former fighters there Phil Aiello, Andrew Shott, Tracy Patterson, Al Russo,Doug Anisky,Joey Wash,Alfie Bevier, Kennley Dillard, John Conners,Eddie Hodas Brian Hurley,Jim Longo, Pat Knee, Joe Laforte. I am sure there are so many more that I have not mentioned but at this time these were the regular fighters there who were usually in the gym more then 4 to 5 times a week. Memories are the only thing that is left I realize it was those long days on the road hitchhiking 25 miles each way! The long days in the gym made me the person I am today. Boxing taught me discipline and having respect for myself and my body. If I didn't go this route it could have all been differn't in a worse way but who knows. I am glad I made that trip! Jimmy Dorsey 5/10/08 I always wanted to be a Boxer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they probably were right!!! lol. My best friend would tell you I'm Outgoing, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and reserved.
