Jimmy's Story

Well, I am still hanging in there with the music thing. After graduating with a music education degree from the U of Arkansas, I took off a year and was a substitute teacher in Tulsa and Sapulpa. Then I got a master's degree in music from the U of Central Arkansas in 1986. I taught music for four long years at Eureka Springs, AR public schools. After a year of graduate study at the U of Memphis, I taught trumpet and jazz for four years at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. That experience let me know that I loved teaching at the college level. For a couple of summers while at Southwestern, I play...Expand for more
ed at Opryland in Nashville. In the summer of 1994, I played at the Aspen Music Festival where I met my wife, Julia. After I left Southwestern, I played trumpet with Holland America Line in cruises in Alaska, the South Pacific, and the Western Caribbean. After six months of travel, I met up with Julia. We eventually ended up in Boston where I got a DMA in trumpet from Boston University. Julia got her PHD at Harvard where we both served at teaching assistants for many classes in music. We have been in Holland, MI since 2002 as we both teach at the college level. Our daughter, Clara, (born 2003) is never a dull moment.
