Joan's Story
Life
Born in York, Pa., attended York city schools, graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1958. Worked for W. T. Grants store in downtown York in the late 50's until early 60's when I enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in April 1963, basic training at Lackland AFB, TX. Went to accounting technical school at Sheppard AFB, TX after basic training, from there I was assigned to McGuire AFB, NJ, working in the accounting office, in the Fall of 1966 I was sent to Drill Instructor school at Lackland, upon completion of the school I taught basic training until June 1967 when I was honorably discharged. I was married to Glindon Ashbrook on April 10, 1967, he was also in the air force, hometown was Prescott, Ark. We had three sons, my husband was killed in an auto accident in Jan. 1973. I was a member of PWP (parents without partners) for a while, then I became too busy with the boys in school activities. s parents footsteps by joining the Air Force, he is planning to retire from the service in the future. Glindon graduated from the U. of Rochester, NY, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the USMC just after graduation. He is currently involved in the war in Iraq, he also is planning to retire in the future. My middle son Ray works in the computer field , he is the father of two sons and two daughters. I am working as an instructional aide for Central York School District and at Sears on the instore marketing team.
Update...June 2010 Glindon retired from the Marines, now working for Round Table Defense. Feburary 2011 Christopher retired from the USAF. He is still working as a civilian with the AF as a supervisor at the military's Landstuhl Hospital in Germany. In August 2012 I retired from my job at Central, I am currently still work at Sears, several times a week.
In March 2013 my son Glen and I are going to visit Chris and Jodi in Germany. They have a son named Aiden, he is their first son. Jodi is from Wisconsin, she worked at WIC at the base in Ramstein AFB, Germany.
