Joan's Story

Hi! Well.....this reunion is right around the corner! Looking forward to being there. Have to admit....a lot of it is curiosity! Last reunion, I was in a very different place. In my life and my head. Think I was probably a little bit snotty and full of myself! Had been living a VERY good life out East. Was not much interested in Milwaukee or my "old life". Well, I got divorced, moved back to Milwaukee and have grown up a lot since then. Good thing for me or I would have wicked bad karma to deal with in next lifetime! Sure there will still be some but think I've worked through a lot of it! So this is some of what I think might be fun for some of you to know about me in case we don't talk tomorrow....or if you won't be there: -most life changing event in my recent life was my Mom passing away. It will be three years July 7th and I still miss her every day. I had chosen not to have children. Being with my Mom almost five days out of seven (not all day!) gave me an understanding of what it really means to nurture someone unconditionally. Hard to put into just a few words, but as I said in a tribute to Mom "I thought I was her rock and her sunshine. Now I understand she was mine". She gave us the greatest gift in that she spent twelve days getting ready to leave this earth. I spent almost every hour with her through all the stages and was lucky enough to be with her at the end. Totally life changing. -I have three tattoos and a small nose piercing! No....none of them done when drinking! Done very deliberately. First tattoo was when I was 45. Nose piercing was when I was o...Expand for more
ver 50. Just some artistic and "free spirit" expression! -I adopted my first pet (ever in my whole life!!) last June! A darling little white dog named Chuck! He weighs 14 pounds....a bichon/poodle. He turned 7 on May 26th. His first Mom passed away and he had two foster homes before coming to me. I love him to pieces!! And again, is a wonderful life lesson in being unselfish and unconditional love. I am SO blessed to have him. I thank him every day for being with me! -instead of retiring, I just started a new career February 1st. I am the Assistant General Manager at the Packing House on East Layton Avenue. Responsible for everything on restaurant floor.....hiring, training, supervising.....in addition to sales and marketing.....booking parties, etc. It is ALOT of work but I feel fortunate to have a job at a time when many people don't have that opportunity. In what little spare time I have, I love to read, I enjoy interior design and am constantly rearranging and buying accessories for my home, I find I enjoy outside plant "design" and my sister told me I have an addiction to Stein's!! I love being outdoors! I am constantly amazed and shocked that I am 62. Don't know how I got here. I guess I feel and think I'm still in my 40s. I am lucky to be in good health, energetic, still looking forward....although I don't want to spend all my time doing that because I know living in the present is really what life is about. Have not....and do not have time to cultivate new friends. Would be great to reconnect as friends with someone from our class if that should happen! Joan
