Joan's Story

Life After moving from Granada Hills to San Jose in the 60s, I spent the next 30 years working in information systems as a computer applications analyst, tech writer and trainer. This is Silicon Valley and techie stuff is what people do. My four children are, of course, grown and married and I have 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.....Just plain love this new generation of young'uns!! I live in a retirement community full of active folks, go on a lot of senior day trips in the area, swim a lot, get involved in volunteer activities from time to time and spend a lot of time with my family. I love the ocean and San Francisco and Monterey Bays so will hop on almost any boat or ship heading for the "big water". I currently have a little black cat who was a stray and adopted me. Her name is actually Misty, but she probably thinks her name is "Dammit", which she hears fairly often as I try to teach her some house manners. It may turn out that only one of us is trainable, and it might not be the cat.... I recently added a little "taco dog" to the household - another stray. I never thought I'd want a Chihuahua, but what a character this little 4 pound girl turned out to be. Her name is Daisy and she and the cat are going through their own version of the Civil War. Actually, Daisy loves the cat and wants to play. Misty the Cat, on the other hand, purely hates Daisy's guts.. At least we've progressed to the point where they can be in the same room at the same time. I've taken some great trips since I retired. Most of them were here in the States to places like Washington D.C., New York, Mount Rushmore, West Point (one of my sons-in-law is a graduate), Grand Canyon, Haw...Expand for more
aii., to Mazatlan and one major trip to Europe. That was very exciting and great fun... and Belgian chocolates are THE BEST. My two daughters and I went on a Norwegian costal cruise in the dead of winter to experience the Northern Lights (thank heaven for my outstanding, understanding sons-in-law). The Northern Lights are breathtaking, and yes, Norway is incredibly cold in the middle of winter. Hopefully, a TransCanada train trip will eventually happen. My most recent adventure has been to join the Volunteer Animal Care Team at the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley. Basically, this is a facility that treats orphaned and/or injured local wildlife - including raptors (hawks & owls). waterfowl, sea birds, opossums, squirrels, skunks, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, songbirds and others - all with the goal of getting them to a point where they can be released back to the wild. In the process I've learned to swamp out a variety of kennels, cages, and outdoor enclosures; how to hand feed everything from tiny little baby birds to ailing red-tail hawks; and best of all, how to administer meds to all sorts of critters. Never thought I'd be giving antibiotic and pain med injections to possums, ducks, geese, hawks, gulls and owls! Actually, this is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. Nursing these badly injured critters back to health (like the hawk that had been shot in the head with a nail gun), and finally releasing them so they can again soar high up in the sky is an incredible experience. I must admit that I haven't really stayed in touch with much of anybody from High School, but do check out your profiles from time to time. Possibly some of you will check out mine...
