Joan's Story

I only went to 11/2 years at RCC after graduating from Ramona and never got my AA. Married, divorced after 13 years and have 2 beautiful daughters. Have been happily remarried since 1985 to Richard and have 6 additional great "kids" and their families, not to mention grandkids and 5 great-grandkids (at the moment). Richard and I spent 25 years fixing up a portion of a 40-acre parcel we own in Amador County, CA and finally were able to build a house and move there on Valentine's Day 2003. I always hated "gardening" when I was younger. To me, the only thing it meant was pulling out goathead stickers. Today, I love it! What a surprise! Years ago when we were physically able, we built a picnic area for nonprofit groups and families to use, put in a breakwater and dock for the little lake, and (with the help of a Ford 800 tractor that Richard could do anything with) moved tons of dirt and rocks for rock walls. Together, we built one cabin and later another one and a cookshed was built. We would live in a tent for weeks, bringing in our own water, since the well wasn't in yet, while we worked. It was hard work, but we loved it. Now, we are unable to do all that. The tractor is gone. Richard's legs are "gone" (he uses a scooter for long distances) and I have had chronic fatigue for about 15 years, so we are limited in what we can do. Therefore, the landscaping we had planned for around our home hasn't been done at all, even though we had plants, boulders, etc. for it. Just recently, with the hired help of friends, rocks and boulders are being placed into position and trees and plants are being planted. We're so thankful! Being born and raised in Riverside, not to mention my Mom and Dad's orange trees, I'm trying to grow a navel orange tree here, but the cold winters are working against me. The first year, it had 1 orange, last year 2, and this year 8! Still don't know if it will survive. We just plante...Expand for more
d a cherry tree, 2 apples, an appricot, and plum. Also, put in clippings from 2 fig trees--one from a home we owned for my mother-in-law in Paloma, and one from a tree that was a cutting from a very old fig tree planted by a padre in a mission! Cuttings are doing great, but no figs. We are both strong believers and attend a wonderful local church. I'm thankful for the way the Lord has had his hand on us and directed our lives, which also involves correcting and guiding us back on the right path when we are wrong. He is so Good! 9/17/2014--Well, bad luck with trees. Lost everything but the orange and figs. Put in a kumquat and it seems to be doing well. It's funny, but I remember more people from Chemawa Jr. High than Ramona High. Maybe it's because we had a smaller school and saw mostly the same people. Just an observation. Just got back from Bay Area Friday. Our son (Richard's), Mike & wife Elena, and Mike's brother Paul, were with us for 4 days. Mike had business there, so he & Elena flew out from TX. We had a wonderful time, of course. Richard almost completely relies on his electric wheelchair to get around. Too many accidents, bangs to the head, etc. over the years. But he has a great attitude. Never feels sorry for himself. My daughter and 2 small sons are living with us. She works for the Amador Social Services office and the boys are 4 & 6 years old. So much fun. We enjoy them immensely. Her oldest, 21 yrs old, was down last week because we had to have his 14 year old black lab, Shadow, put to sleep. Sad, but it was time. Shadow was so happy to see "his boy". It was a good thing the could be together at the end. When he went to live & go to school in Oregon, we inherited Shadow and his 17 yr old cat, Buttercup--who also passed away here. I would love to post photos of them all, but my girls don't want their photos, nor our grandkids' photos on the internet. Too many crazies out there.

Khalil was down because his 14-yr. old black lab, Shadow, had to be put to sleep. Cancer. This was taken just before he went back to OR.
In SF with Mike, Elena & Paul. Richard had chemo on his face. Just 2 days later, all the red blotches were gone.

Little Adam & Katelyn were dressing up--Adam as a Ninja and Katelyn as a t.Rex. Adam is very interested in that tail Katie has.
