Joan's Story

Life John & I have been married since 1977. We have 2 sons. John Jr is a graduate of TN Tech in music. His main instrument is trumpet, although he also plays piano & guitar & sings. He thought he eventually wanted to work in a hospital as a music therapist, but his church while he was in college offered him a position as instrumental Director of Music & head of a new music school. The Stevens Street School of the Performing Arts got off to a good start, with around 30 students its first year. The 2nd year, they had about 80 students. They continue to grow, and are now self-sufficient. In past summers he worked on music staff at Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator, NY as a trumpeter and music arranger. One summer he was Christian Ed Worship Leader & Head Host of the dining hall, and another summer he hosted in the dining hall again & spent a little more time with Music Staff. He got married in March of 2008, and welcomed his first child, Nathaniel Robert, June 25, 2009. Carolyn Gail arrived May 8, 2011. Eleanor Jane was born March 8, 2013. John is currently working on his Master's degree at the Nashville campus of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and serving as Worship Pastor at Faith Bible Church, Spokane, Washington. David graduated valedictorian of his high school class of 465 with a perfect gpa. He graduated in May, 2005, from Duke as an English major and ended up among the top 2% of his class at Duke, maintaining a 3.9 gpa. During one college summer, he studied in Ghana, Africa, and Costa Rica. He spent a semester at New York University and interned at a publishing company. Another summer he spent time in Chile doing independent study. His real dream is to dance on Broadway. He was on 2 dance teams while at Duke: ballroom & salsa. He also plays trombone & sings. He spent the year after graduation as the personal assistant to one of his English professors, who was paraplegic. He hired a graduating senior each year & paid them enough to pay off college loans & get a start on grad school. David was worried about grad school, so he applied to 16 English doctoral programs, hoping to get into 3 or 4. He received 12 fully-funded offers. He visited his top 3 choices: Penn, Stanford, & Yale. He accepted the offer from Penn & received his PhD in English on May 13, 2013. He enjoyed a relaxing summer before starting as an English teacher and house parent at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA. He is now serving as a Cluster Dean and teacher. John & I own a business in Huntington, IN. (See work profile). John still plays a bit of clarinet and saxophone. I play bassoon or flute in a community band. Many years ago, he got back into the music teaching area by becoming the assistant band director at our local high school. He occasionally teaches some clarinet and saxophone lessons. I taught elementary music 2 mornings a week for 3 years at the local Lutheran school, until it closed. The final year there, I started teaching on Fridays at Huntington Catholic Middle School, & enjoyed that. Several years ago, I ad...Expand for more
ded Wednesdays at the Primary Building. I later added 2 more days a week at the Middle Building as a librarian and classroom aide. I just retired after 16 years there. I sang in the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chorus for 23 years, giving that up a year ago. We thought life would be much slower with the boys gone, but it seems to be picking up again. College John and I both have BME (Bachelor of Music Education) degrees from the University of Kentucky. I have my Master's in Education from Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne (IPFW). My degree says Indiana University! Whoever would have thought I'd have a degree from IU?! John is currently working on his Master's at Ball State. Workplace After graduation from college, I taught in Kettering for a year, then got married & taught in southern Indiana for 3 years, while directing a church choir & 3 bell choirs. I took a break from work to have kids, then got back in the workforce by running our fund raising business office out of our home so I could be there for the kids. We now have a facility out in the county (kids are gone). We did fund raising in most of the state of Indiana & marketed software & did fund raising services for customers in 46 states & Canada. That business is gradually slowing down as the fund raising industry is changing. Several years ago, I went back to teaching music part time a few days a week in a local Lutheran school. The school closed at the end of my third year. That year I also started teaching music part time in the local Catholic MS -- the ecumenical music teacher! I have been directing my current church choir for 40 years now (volunteer basis). John was Band Director 4yrs at Eastern H/S in Pekin, IN, before going into fundraising. Eastern's Marching Band was ranked 4th in state two of his four years there. In a school of about 450 students, 93 of them were on the field, an increase from the original 39, which included some 8th graders. He worked for a national fund raising company until we started our own. Currently, he is teaching part time at the local h/s (he's a third of a band director, working 2 periods a day). He is adjunct faculty at Huntington University, where he plays in the Symphonic Band and Orchestra, performs in Faculty Recitals, and teaches some middle, high school and college clarinet and saxophone students. He directed the Varsity Brass (backup band for the h/s Show Choir) during David's senior year. They won Best Band 3x that season. John is currently enrolled in grad school at Ball State University in an attempt to update his credentials so he can 1) teach in public schools, 2) be more useful to Huntington University, which is limited in what he can do with a Bachelor's Degree, 3) update his clarinet and saxophone teaching skills and 4) [his words] not be the lowest degreed person in his own family. In Spring of 2005, John was called by an area school to fill in for a band director who had emergency heart surgery. John went with the band to competition and directed them for important local functions.
