Joan's Story

I think for young people who aren't sure what they want to do with their lives, college can be a very good thing. After all, the first two years, everyone is required to take pretty much the same courses. So you can be undecided about what you want to be "when you grow up" for those additional two years! It gets trickier after that. But I always knew I liked working with people, as opposed to non-living things, so I gravatated toward courses like psychology, and the humanities. I'll never forget getting my BA in psychology and not being able to find any employment that had a thing to do with it. I ended up pumping gas at a gas station in Petaluma, rationalizing that, in a way, I was "working with people"; I'd guess what kind of personality they had based on the car they drove. Those were the days when you even had to wash the car windows and check the oil gauge. Did not take me long to realize I needed to further my education, so I went back to school and decided an MSW would be a good choice. I worked as a drug/rehab counselor in Fresno to help put me through college. Graduating from Fresno State, I got my first MSW job in San Luis Obispo. I loved living there, but was worried about the nuclear power plant looming so close by. After a few years I moved back to Sonoma County, where I had earlier fallen in love with the vast mustard fields, and sheer beauty. I worked 25 years for the State of California licensing group homes, homes for the elderly, the disabled and the mentally ill. Last 7 years or so, I became the Child Care Advocate, covering 8 northern California counties. I met with city and county ...Expand for more
officials to help them through the maze of regulations, in order to create more good quality licensed child care in their areas. I married later in life, at age 31, and had a child at 36, kind of old for back then, not so much now. (His mother complained that I "robbed the cradle", he is 3 years younger that I am.) My husband is also from Fresno, and we met at Upstart Crow, remember that place? I was reading about Europe and was planning a trip to reward myself for getting my MSW. As it turned out, he was planning to go too, and we ended up traveling around Europe together. You really get to know someone well when you are backpacking around European countries, not sure where you are going or where you will end up. Maybe you fall in love out of sheer necessity, or practicality. He knew several languages and I knew zilch. We now have a 24 year old son, studying to be a physical therapist. I retired about five years ago and became a Master Gardener, which is really fun. You're required to donate a number of hours each year in a community project (I work at Harvest for the Hungry, tending to the vegetable gardens) and the course I took was through UC Davis. Recently, I started working as a retired annuitant with the State, this time in Adoptions. I do homestudies for couples who want to adopt children in the foster care system. I enjoy this alot, because I get to learn about people and their lives, my favorite thing. My husband owns a computer store in Sonoma County (oldest one around, since 1980). I miss my twin sister, Janet, she died right before the fourth of July in 2005 of an inoperable brain tumor.
