Joni's Story

Born in Columbia, SC, my dad, being in the military, moved us to Valdosta, GA when i was 2 years old. Sometime between 1962 and 1965, we lived in Phoenix, AZ and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Right before turning 6, my family moved to Clark Air Force Base, Philippine Islands so that we could be closer to my dad while he served as a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War. In 1968, we returned to Valdosta, GA and i enrolled in the last half of third grade at W. G. Nunn Elementary School. We stayed in Valdosta until the end of 5th grade and we moved to San Antonio, TX. I attended the 6th grade at Rose Garden Elemetary School then went to a Junior High School maybe kirby something? (for the life of me, I can not remember the name of it!) After being in San Antonio until 1973, we moved to Pensacola, FL where i have most of my memorable moments. We lived on the Naval Air Station, in a 2-story duplex with MONA BINGHAM (whom I have lost contact with and hope to find her through here) and her family on the side adjoining ours. we left pensacola in 1976 and moved to the philippines with my family. we lived there until i graduated in 1978, left and moved to sumter, sc. i lived there for almost 12 years, worked for consulting foresters, married and moved to columbia, sc. i began working at midlands technical college in 1990, retired on disability in ...Expand for more
2000 and continued to work at the college on contract until july, 2007. My ex-husband and I split up in 1999, having no children. I, then married a guy who was also a military brat, Steve Smith. I was diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy in 1977, am in a wheelchair. My life physically has been a struggle, to say the least, but i've learned so much because of it. it has changed my life in a very good way. I try to be positive about every aspect of life. I am a romantic at heart. There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience. I like to read, I like to dream; I like to listen. I like to see the sunrise in the morning, I like to see the moonlight at night; I like to feel the music, I like to smell the wind coming from the ocean. I like flowers in spring, rain in summer, leaves in autumn, and snow in winter. I like to sleep early, I like to get up late; I like to be alone, I like to be surrounded by people. I like the country's peace; I like beautiful lakes, I like gourmet food and designer shoes; I like good books and romantic movies. I like the land and the nature, I like people. And, I love to laugh. We all have many choices in life, and mine is to be happy. I have rekindled old friendships because of classmates.com and keep searching for the special people that helped my years growing up, much more pleasurable!
