Joan's Story
After 3 years at Tufts I decamped for London where I
lived for 4 years and entered my first (disastrous) marriage.Two daughters later and back in the US I started what was to become an art reproduction company, working with Museums and Cathedrals in the US and abroad to develop licensed sculptural reproductions. Facsimiles, Ltd. ultimately employed 35 people (small potatoes, I know)and PAID THEIR HEALTH INSURANCE! In 2001, after 15 years we succumbed to pressure from Asian knockoffs and went under. My management experiences should maybe have made me pro-business, but somehow I managed to maintain my leftist credentials(sorry Mr. Schmid) After that failure and that of my second,slightly less disastrous, marriage, I turned to full time painting, raising my wonderful granddaughter who was just short of wonderful even in her teenage years,and taking care o...Expand for more
f my amazing mother during her decline. She died at 92, but only stopped walking three miles a day at 89. In 2006 I moved to the south of France near Carcassonne where I now live with my two wonderful hiking companions, shelties Rowan and Frodo, and a small visiting granddachshund, The art community here is vibrant and the weather superb. Gorgeous country, and GREAT MEDICAL CARE! Don't believe anything else.
As for favorite teachers: Norman Schmid, despite the
frequent terrors and tongue lashings. He instilled in
me a fascination for history. I still remember Danny Bender in passionate political argument with him. I
didn't have the guts to engage until later.
One do over? Delay romantic entanglements and join
the Peace Corps. Do something to change things.
Look at Marty Eichelberger! I knew he was a nice
guy, but turned out to be a world changer.
