Joanie's Story

Life After graduating from Lincoln, I attended the University of Minnesota from September 1967 until March 1969. Stephen Ward (Lincoln class of 1966) and I were married in March and then moved to Tennessee and Mississippi to finish his enlistment in the Navy. We were extremely fortunate in that we were never separated during his naval duties. In the fall of 1972, Stephen and I both returned to the University of Minnesota. I graduated in March of 1975 from the College of Education, returning there again to complete my Masters in 1985. I taught kindergarten, first, second, and sixth grade in the Osseo School District for 32 years. I retired from full-time teaching in Sept. 2007, but have stayed involved in the teaching profession in a variety of positions. Our older daughter, Tristana, was born in 1971 one year before Stephen got out of the Navy. After a wonderful childhood which focused on developing her musical talents, Tristana graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1993. She now lives in Excelsior. Tristana has a band, Pandora's Other Box. She also works with Special Education Students. Tristana had our first grandchild, Tegan, November 3, 2007. He is a joy to be around! He and I spend at least one day a week together! Tristana released her first record, Dreamland, in 2009. She earned several awar...Expand for more
ds for her album in 2010. Contact me and I will give you her website. Our younger daughter, Leia, was born in 1980. She, too, had a childhood filled with musical activities, but has decided to use her talents to teach. She has the compassion and work ethic needed for the job. It is fun to see her at workshops and share classroom stories! Leia is now a principal in the Robbinsdale School District. Leia is married and has three step children whom we all adore! Raising our two daughters has been the most important focus of our life. As a part of that, we have been very involved in school and church activities including traveling the world with youth groups. Unfortunately my husband, Stephen, passed away May 2015 from Pulmonary Fibrosis. I miss him every day but I'm thankful he's free from the pain. I am praying about what God wants me to do in this next chapter of my life. My brother and sisters live with their families in the twin cities area. Unfortunately, both of my parents have passed away, Workplace I retired in 2007 but soon began subbing almost full time. Then, I taught preschool for two years before Stephen got really sick. After he died, I continued to sub and then I taught English online to Chinese children for two years. I am currently taking some time off and praying about what God wants me to do next.
