Joann's Story

Life After a couple of engagements during which I discovered that they weren't the one for me and vice versa, I have settled into a happy single lifestyle. I have missed having a family, but perhaps that's all for the best. I was able to care for my brother when he was dying in 1999 and for the last five years I have cared fir my mother. She has Alzheimers. The first couple of years I was able to continue working but then it came down to the decision of..do I stay home and care for her or place her in a residential care facility? The financial side was pretty much a wash - my take home pay was about the same as the cost of putting her in a care facility. I knew that she would be happier in her own home and I would be able to provide one-on-one care rather than six, eight, ?-to-one. Sometimes it's very hard and distressing, especially now that she isn't always able to speak. I keep reminding myself that she is happier and healthier in her own home and with someone who loves her. She may not know who I am anymore (lately I have been her older sister!) but she knows she is loved. I have had an opportunity to do genealogical research from my home computer. I even found some new living relatives and have enjoyed swapping photos and sharing information with them. I'm really looking forward to actually meeting them. I'm planning to take a trip this year (2005) to visit some of them. I also found some friends thru this site and others. My happ...Expand for more
iest/saddest discovery was that last year I found David Clemo. His parents had been my parents best man and matron of honor. David's family also lived in Encanto and had been like family to me. I lost track of him when we were in our early twenties. We both had moved many times. I found him the summer of 2004, we got together and had plans to see each other again soon. Unfortunately, I read in the paper that David died Dec 30, 2004. I'm so glad that we had a chance to mend some fences before David passed away. In the past I have been very active in church activites. I am a member of the Mission San Luis Rey Parish. I have been a lector, a Eucharistic minister, and a catechist (teacher). My participation has been less in the past year. I am also a Secular Franciscan and have been minister (president) of my fraternity and of the St. Francis Region (Southern California). I look forward to a time when I can be with my parish and Francsican family again. I have also found a new community thru the computer. My nephews insisted that I buy and start playing a game called Everquest. Well..after buying a new computer that was equipped for gaming, I was able to play the game. Now I get to be with my nephews and great-nephews and great-nieces virtually almost daily (they are in Santee and Ramona and New Jersey). We are in a guild with other good folks from all over the USA. It gives me contact with the outside world so I don't feel so disconnected.
