Joann's Story

I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were wrong - but I still didn't get to be a doctor. Life took a dark and twisty road for a while... I blow off steam during water aerobics; acupuncture; qi cong If I'm working, I need car service, water, and 20 min of peace to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My parents were my heroes. I wish I had spent more time laughing with them rather than at them or acting out and aggravating them. Having kids humbles you. You either accept complete responsibility for molding a new life or fail miserably and become irresponsible. My girls are a triumph of spirit against destiny. They both changed me profoundly in many ways, though each very very differently... If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to charity, then spend the rest on daughters, a luxurious home and begin writing. To be truly happy I'd be here in Brooklyn, which I love - it's home, writing about life in my palace on the promenade... simple dreams. I ...Expand for more
am 54. When I was 12, I thought people over 50 would be dead. Bad call. My best friend would tell you I'm soft, but people who don't know me probably think I'm very strong. My kevlar exterior belies an inside with the consistency of gooey marshmallow. Not with this caboose... simple lines. I share my home with daughters, which I find frustrating - I was an only child. Do over? I'd have travelled a much different road: I'd take better care of myself, more fit than French fries, happy, wealthy, well adjusted woman who happened to be a pediatric cardiologist with someone I genuinely respect in my life. In 10 years, I hope to be an author. I'm going to get there even if I have to change the names to protect the guilty. My first real friend in high school was Peggy. Lots of wonderful memories of that time in my life. My first job was boring but I remember most about it is being happy - and excited to have my own money. The perks were fabulous! I always wanted to win Lotto so I could prove I'd still be the same beeotch in better clothes.
