Joanne's Story

Bio too long to write! SO much has happened since we graduated from PHS in '76! College After graduating PHS in 1976, I attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ part-time. I later went back to college as a mature student and graduated from Totton College in Southampton England with the equivalent of an Associates degree in Biology & Psychology. Workplace In a nutshell, I worked at Parsippany Town Hall after graduating PHS. Worked for General Drafting Company, mapmakers, in Convent Station, NJ, then Exxon Touring Service in Florham Park, where I joined Exxon Enterprises Solar Thermal Systems Division, and was ultimately promoted to the Computer Science Dept of Exxon Corporation in Florham Park, NJ, where I was employed for 5 1/2 years. In 1985, I left Exxon to pursue a career selling real estate with Coldwell Banker while also providing computer training to the staff. I pursued a part-time career in fitness as well, becoming certified by the American Council of Exercise (ACE) and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), to teach fitness classes in various clubs in Morris County, NJ. In 1987, I launched, owned and managed a desktop publishing business for nine years, "Desktop Magic" where I established clients in major companies and worked in New York City, Northern New Jersey, and Dallas, Texas. Love I met my soul mate and moved to England in 1996 to be with him. During the first year there I attended Totton College in Southampton, studying Biology and Psychology. After graduating I provided computer training in community colleges and presented fitness workshops and classes in the south of England. I frequented many a pub for a few pints with me mates - and blimey! I married the bloke with the funny accent! The chap's a real diamond geezer! Our wedding was held in an old castle-looking manor house in Hampshire, England, and we later exchanged our rings and vows on a mountain top dotted with sheep on the Isle of Wight overlooking the Solent. Even though Brits are known to be reserved, my hubby has a wild side, so while in England I surprised him with para-gliding lessons (for both of us, of course!) You basically run off the edge of a cliff with a parachute and glide along the thermals until you want to land. It's about as close as one can come to flying like a bird and crikey it's a trip! The following year I surprised him with a ziplining adventure. Activities I love bicycling and have cycled every place I've visited. It is a great way to see the sights, meet people, and experience the culture. We followed the Tour de France and cycled the French Alps including Col de Madelaine, Les Deux Alps and Alpe de Huez. Off-road mountain biking is another passion. I have competed in mountain bike races in the US and the UK, with the highlight being the UK National Championships (throughout England, Wales, & Scotland) where I finished 3rd in my age category and qualified for the 1998 World Championships. I have retired from racing, but have ridden century rides on my road bike and continue to mountain bike ride when time and weather permits. My goal is to cycle 100 miles minus my age for the rest of my life. So far, so good! Traveling and Adventure I love traveling and adventure, not through the eyes or perspective of a tourist, but to get off the beaten path and really dive right in and experience the entire culture. I've traveled to 25 different countries and 34 of our 50 states, many of them adventure trips that involve biking, hiking, camping, rafting, snowboarding, skiing, snowboarding, windsurfing or action-oriented sports. While riding in a jeep through the Ngorogoro crater in Africa on safari, we selected not to snap photos of zebra while sipping champagne behind air conditioned tinted glass windows in a Range Rover, (although we did see tons of wild animals and took some great pictures from the open top Jeep!) we camped in the bush where Massai tribesmen herded goat...Expand for more
s; biked through lush coffee and banana plantations, along dusty narrow roads past mud huts in villages with no electricity or running water; and played with little barefoot children who gathered 'round us, singing songs in Swahili. They laughed, clapped, and jumped up and down with glee when we did cartwheels with them and gave them rides on our bikes. We camped and biked in the rain shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro and biked and snorkeled on the island of Zanzibar. Tanzania was the trip of a lifetime. I loved skiing and heli-skiied in the Canadian Rockies and many areas in the U.S. and the French Alps, but since this old dog learned a new trick at age 40 - to snowboard - I hung up my skis and now all I do is ride! After tearing a medial collateral ligament while skiing in Utah I had knee surgery in 1995 so now I enjoy snowboarding much better! I also got to ride a “ski bike” in Utah with friends. I originally learned to windsurf at Long Beach Island, NJ, then did it in Cape Hatteras, NC; Padre Island, TX; Aruba; and in the Solent in England (leading to the English Channel) brrrr! In 2001, I moved west of Washington, D.C. to Northern Virginia, where I worked as a fitness consultant, personal trainer, and USA Cycling Certified coach. I taught a variety of classes and presented workshops at private clubs, gyms, and corporate fitness centers. I'm ACE & AFAA certified, indoor cycling certified, Gold certified in TurboKick (cardio kickboxing) and PiYo (Pilates-Yoga); Les Mills' Body Pump certified, a Zumba Fitness licensed instructor and an Examiner for AFAA. In VA I had a home-based gym where I offered personal training and coaching. Our adventure vacation for 2009 was a 16-day hiking, biking, rafting, camping expedition in Peru: hiking and climbing the Andes Mountains with altitudes of 20,000 feet - along the Inka Trail to Machu Picchu, followed by mountain biking the Amazon cloud forest jungle and white water rafting class 1-5 rapids of the Annipurac River, camping and sightseeing. I took up motorcycling in 2011 and ride a 1976 Honda CB400F that my husband has lovingly restored. The "Good Girl" has won a few awards in vintage motorcycle shows! In August 2014 we traveled to Australia (beautiful country; saw Koalas and Kangaroos in the wild!), Singapore, Malaysia and the islands of Penang and magnificent Langkawi. In May 2015 we had to leave all our friends in VA and all the wonderful fitness classes I taught at AOL for 14 years and moved to Magnolia, Texas (outside Houston). In October/November 2015 we traveled for a month and a half to Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the island of Phuket. In 2016 my hubby and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary bicycling in San Antonio, Texas, and I got a second motorcycle, a 2012 650cc Ducati Monster 696. We celebrated Christmas in England in 2016 and in 2017 spent December in Singapore and Malaysia. We continued on to Thailand, where toured Bangkok by bike, then headed to Chaing Mai, Thailand, to hike, bike, and board a boat to Laos, where we downed shots of Scorpion, Cobra, and Gecko-infused whiskey! To celebrate my 60th birthday, we attended the MotoGP in Austin, then spent a week hiking, biking, and birding at 5 of the most beautiful state parks in the Hill Country. Took another trip to England and Wales this the summer, and this year we are heading to Budapest and Prague. Yin and Yang: In addition to action-oriented activities, I also enjoy yoga, birding, and gardening! Well that was a long "nutshell" and I purposely left out the parts having to do with all of the sports injuries I've sustained through the years and the surgeries, rehab and recovery involved. Rather than dwell on limitations, I am grateful and embrace each opportunity to learn, explore, achieve, and experience something new every chance I get for as long as I am walking this earth!
