Joanne's Story

Life My husbands name is Walter. We met on a blind date and much to the surprise of our family & friends, we married just 6 weeks later. On Dec. 15, 2005, we will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. We have 2 children. Paula is 32 & a full time mom with a 3 year old daughter. Her husband Bob is a fireman/EMT and they reside in Newark. Our son James is 25, recently divorced and lives in Arlington, Va. He is an IT Engineer for Nytor. His work involves IT security systems for Homeland Security & other government affiliations. I also have two stepsons. Carl is 41 & has 2 boys (17 & 6)and 1 girl (9). David is almost 40 & has 1 girl (16). All in all, we have 5 grandchildren. For 24 years, we lived in Newark. Our children were both private school educated and graduated from Caravel Academy, a school not far from where I grew up. In 1999, shortly after our daughter's marriage, we built a home on a Par 3 golf course in Middletown - near Boyd's corner. My husband retired from DuPont after 30 years of service, went to work for Accenture for the next 7 years and retired from there July 2004. I decided that living on a golf course is crazy unless you play so 3 years ago I learned to play. No golf widow for me - I can give him a run for his money. Now, when we travel, we take our clubs with us. When the kids are grown & it's just the two of you again, a train trip around the country is a wonderful vacation. Two years ago, we planned out & took such a trip - lasting a full 5 months. I highly recommend it. I was a legal...Expand for more
secretary before marrying Walt. When we were expecting our first child, I quit and became a full time homemaker & mother. I did not return to work until my youngest was in high school. When I did, it was not to secretarial work. I became interested in nursing and thought a good place to get my feet wet was as a nurses aid. So I became one and worked 3 years in a nursing home. Unfortunately, crushing all my lumbar discs put an end to any possibility of pursuing a nursing careet. But that's OK. Now my husband and I are retirees and our life consists of travel, golf, & time with children & grandchildren. I have a talent for interior decorating and have been told I should go into business. After years of rebuilding our previous home to include all the things that the designer forgot, I concluded that houses should be designed by women. Therefore, when we were embarking on having a house built on the golf course, I took the blueprint from the builder & re-designed it (according to scale) and submitted it for approval by the architech. I love cooking, baking & sewing. For years, I use to make & decorate cakes for all occasions including wedding cakes for friends & relatives. When the kids were young, I made clothes. As I got older, my interest changed to home interiors & window treatments. I like shopping for & refinishing antiques. In my younger days, I was an avid bowler & carried a 155 average. Now, it's golf - golf & more golf. I am not a pro by any means but I have come close to breaking 100 for 18 holes.
