Joanne's Story
Nick and I will celebrate our 43rd anniversary in August. Not lucky enough to have children, we have had many furry family members, with a corgi/collie mix named Riley being our latest. Earned a BS in math, Master of Arts in Teaching (math), Educational Specialist in curriculum and supervision. After my teaching in public schools, we decided to volunteer with the newly-formed River Hills Emergency Squad. As a result, we became the first husband and wife in SC to go through all 3 levels of EMT certification (Basic, Intermediate, Paramedic) together. 30-year pins in August! Have been honored by the community as "Citizens of the Year" and "Good Neighbors First". Squad named us as representing the heart and soul of the squad by having a sketch of us placed in the living library. Also along the way, I became a 2-time survivor of breast cancer, '93 and '98. Did chemo and radiation - yuck! Lost ALL my hair! To show there IS life after breast cancer, I completed the 60-mile Avon 3-Day cancer wallk in 2002, raising over $5000 for the cause. Will coninue as volunteers as long as we are able!
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is John VanAllsburg, because we were great friends.
