Joanne's Story

After 45 years, I finally moved back to Seattle last summer and am living on Alki beach with one of my younger sisters - it's like being on vacation whenever the sun in out! Walking, roller skating, kayaking, and paddle boarding are right across the street! It is so great to be so close to family again (tho we all miss Carolyn, who passed away in Dec 2012). My son has been here since 2006 getting his MD and PhD and is now doing his residency in internal med at the U, hence my move with the expectation of grandchildren next year. Surprise! my first grandchild, a boy, is due at the end of Aug! The interim 45 yrs were spent as follows: - BA in psychol at USF (1974), then BS in physical therapy at UCSF (1975), married 1978, son Tony 1982, MA in exercise sci at SF State (1983). Hobbies: patchwork quilting, bicycling, running, skiing. - moved to Bethesda, MD 1985, worked part-time as a PT, board certified as a cardiopulmonary clinical specialist PT in 1988. Became a professional clown 1985, doing bday parties, company picnics, and even clowning at the White House on a few occasions. Began teaching step and other exercise classes at the Y in 1988. Added white water rafting to hobbies. - moved to San Marino, CA in 1992, as Tony was about to turn 10. Worked one day a week at USC Univ Hosp, taught Cardiopulm PT at Mount St Mary's College, and continued to teach exercise classes for the Y; also volunteered endless hours with the PTA, as most moms do in San Marino. Switched to white water kayaking and sometimes wave surfing on the oce...Expand for more
an. In HS, Tony joined the water polo and swim teams, so many months were busy watching HS water sports with other team moms! I ended up becoming the water sports photographer for Tony's teams, and then ended up staying for another 4 yrs after he graduated to cover both girls and boys water polo and swim teams, until I finally ended my career by falling in the pool with my camera!! - husband decided he didn't want to be married anymore at 28 yrs and we finalized our divorce a couple of years later. I haven't had a lonely day since we went our separate ways! It's so nice to be able to be my naturally happy and joyful self and not to worry that it bothers someone else!! - bought a condo Pasadena, where I lived for 7 yrs before moving back to Seattle. Spent 6 yrs on the Homeowners Assoc Board of Directors, including two as president. OMG! I will never do that again! So much work and knowing way more than you really want to know about your property...! Now I plan to rent for the rest of my life - call the landlord if anything goes wrong and move whenever you want (hopefully never!) without losing major money! (Yes, I bought at the peak of the market in 2007, so I didn't fare too well when I sold my condo last year - such is life!) I am absolutely loving this new chapter of my life and being pretty much retired! I am spending my time on spiritual growth and having fun - oh, and I've got to get a Winnie the Pooh quilt done for my grandson-to-come. Maybe I'll even finish the quilt I started when I was pregnant with Tony 33 yrs ago!
