Jodi's Story

Life Hi everyone! I am still in Boulder, Colorado. It is beautiful here, I have a great view of the Flat Irons from my living room. I am teaching in Thornton, CO at McElwain Elementary. This is a new school for me and an administrator I really like, so I am excited for the coming year. The Scout I bought is now repainted as well as overhauled. Learned how to make door panels, that was fun! I am currently running it on 100% biodiesel. I have 3 dogs, 3 cats. My mom and step dad have moved to Cave Junction, Oregon and have a beautiful piece of land. Reminds me of Fallbrook before it grew too much . Jill is still there with her three kids. John, his wife Carol and two sons are in Big Bear. My dad and stepmom are still in Temecula. Dad has a new hobby business building the Columbia 2 speed trans for early model Fords. They are really the only things I miss about California besides the friends and families at Sycamore School where I used to teach. Made a lot of new friends here, working with several universities and the Library of Congress. Life is continually exciting! Looking forward to my 42nd year on the planet and hoping that we can all work together to make it a better more peaceful place! School I think my two favorite teachers had to be Bill Reinstra and Pete Fellios. I know Bill has retired and Pete works for the district office. Some of my favorite memories include Duran Duran, Tasha Burchett, Cathy Wolk and Cyndi Hagen. I remember spending the night at Tasha's because I was living with my dad my senior year and had to drive from Elsinore. Friday night football games, FFA activities, Del Mar Fair, field hockey, journalism and dances. College I have to admit that although I would not change the fact that I went to college, college was a disaster. It was where I found out that I was sleeping around even though I had never slept with anyone and where I met and married my ex husband who happened to be one of my professors! It is also where I learned that booze and...Expand for more
teenagers are a bad combination. Boy, do we make some really stupid mistakes as we grow up! However, it was also where I found out that hard work does pay off. If I had to do it again, I would go away to college where no one knew me. I would live on campus and I would stay away from stupidity!! Well, I suppose if I was 17 again it might be hard to do that, but I would at least try!:-) Workplace I started out as a substitute teacher while looking for an Agriculture position. I didn't find one and ended up teaching 5th grade at a catholic school. I taught there for 4 years and then moved to the local school district. I taught at Sycamore for 8 years. 2 years I taught a 5/6 and 6 years I taught a 4/5/6. In 2000 I applied for and was recognized as a National Board Certified Teacher. In 2004 I moved to Boulder, Colorado and was hired to teach a 4/5 at a school in Northglenn. The 4/5 became a 2/3 when the numbers changed. This year I will be working with most of my previous students and teaching a 3/4. It should be a lot of fun! I am also in the process of looking for an administrative position as I have completed my Administrative Credential. We shall see where it all leads. It has been 7 years since I began teaching at that little school in Northglenn. I have since moved to a Title I school and taught 2nd language learners for 3 years. I was asked the end of this year to leave my position due to the fact that I actually had an opinion about how kids, parents and staff should be treated. As a result I will now be teaching for another school in our district that specializing in the arts. I am super excited and cannot wait to get rolling. I have also been advocating for education through lobbying at the state legislature and working within my own local union. Education is hurting all over, but Colorado is dragging butt end of the dog so to speak. I am hoping that with some hard work we can make change that will really make a difference for kids, families and teachers.
