Jodi's Story

Life I graduated from Purdue U. in '87 and moved to Arizona with my husband, Chris. We have two kids, Nick and Kaity. Things have certainly changed since we were in High School ! I am a stay-at-home mom who never seems to be home! I am running a support group at my church for stressed out kids and their families, and just started working part-time with children being raised by their grandparents(also in a support group setting). Love to hear from you guys! Jodi School I loved High School! Even with the ups and downs of it all, it was a great time for me. I wouldn't really change anything about it. I feel I went out and tried to do all that I wanted to. I had great friends and a wonderful first love. I hope for at least that for my own children. I learned a lot about who I was and who I wanted to be during those years. (I learned even more when I went off to college, but that's a story for another page!) I loved being involved in German Club, music, and the plays/musicals at Marshall. I loved the Friday night football games (with Pizza afterward, where someone always spilled a drink!). Sneaking out to have lunch at McDonalds or Dairy Queen are another fond memory. One regret is that I wish I would have been able to spend a few more nights in Indy before we moved after graduation so I could have said goodbye to all my friends and attended some of the grad. parties. Just goes to show there are consequences to all our actions. I had just totalled my mom's car (driving it when I wasn't supposed to be), so we had only one car. My parent's had already moved to Lafayette, so I couldn't stay behind. Hope you have great memories as well! College College was a great time! I had so much fun experiencing the freedoms and the wide range of ideas on campus. I remember being terrified my first night there. I was so scared after my parents left and was grateful the school had a freshman mixer so I could mingle with others who felt the same way! Soon though, I was into the whole campus life. I loved learning, meeting new people, partying, dating, and really discovering who I was. I had wonderful classes- Iloved Biology Sophomore year, and I was very jazzed by all my Social Work and counseling type of classes (especiall...Expand for more
y in the Jr. and Sr. year. My roomate the last two years, Candy Humphries, was my best friend and confidant. I am so glad we met! Dorm life was a great way to get acclimated to campus life, but I loved moving off campus my jr. year. In spite of the problems with a couple of rude roommates that year, I learned a lot and am grateful for the lessons! I met my husband in Florida my Jr. year on Spring Break. We met in a bar that was sponsoring a Purdue night. I'm not sure it was love at first sight, but we were pratically inseperable afer we met. During my Sr. year, I had to do intern work for my degree and worked at the Lafayette Senior Center. This was a great experience and I loved the adminstrative duties I had to perform. I got a real feel for how to concretely help someone in need through that job. My favorite memories of Purdue have to do with going to the Football Games, Going to parites, hanging out at the frats where I was a little sis and my real brother was a Brother, Hanging out with friends and my roommate Candy!Learning, discussing my political/religious views, and mostly meeting my husband and having coffee with him in the mornings at Stone Hall! There is absolutely nothing in life like the 4 years you spend in college. Workplace I have only held a couple of part time jobs since graduating from college, but they sure were helpful during tight times. My most important job is being a mom and I feel that job takes up more time than I have most of the time. I enjoy being the mom who is home when all the kids get out of school though. It's nice to know where my kids are and who their friends are. I have enjoyed the volunteer work I do now more than any of the paying positions I have held. I get so much out of running the support groups for families at my church. I see such a strong need for this type of thing and feel very blessed to be able to offer the chance for children to talk about their toughest life's questions. I am now working part time as a therapist in a support group setting for children who are being raised by grandparents. It is challenging because there are some real traumas in these situations, but I feel blessed to be able to help the kids see just how special and wonderful they are.
