Joe's Story

I am Proud to be a Graduate of LVTI 1988, I attended the Electrical Program and was grateful to have such a great Class. I wasn't the smartest person by any means but more of a hands on person. I got into the IBEW union and was the first class that entered the brand new school in Dorchester. Unfortunately that was they year of Proposition 2-1/2 and the work within the Unions was at that time the lowest in years. I was laid off and sign the books with the average call back time to be 4 years or more. As an apprentice I worked with my Boss in the Union, because we were the last group to be laid off. Then there was no work and bills had to be paid with unemployment gone I had to make a decision. I was given an opportunity to learn the Funeral Business and jumped on it and completed the Apprentice program. While I was working with the Funeral home I walked into another great opportunity and had to make a decision overnight because the resume date was 2 day's out. What happened was myself and my partner had to pick up a deceased loved one that was at the State Medical Examiners Office in Boston. As we were waiting for the Autopsy to be finished when we were told the decedant was completed we ended up waiting 2 hours. The girl working case/call intake asked me if I wanted to view and Autopsy? I was scared crap but in my mind was if this beautiful can do it then I can! Mind you I never changed a diaper then and today but I was willing to view an actual Autopsy in the works. OMG LOL" So I viewed about 10 seconds and focused on the clock in there as the girl was saying your doing well for someone who never seen this type of work. She then gave me a tour and explained what everyone did and why it was done, that was interesting itself. My partner said that she was hitting on me, which I denied until she admitted it to me later. As an electrician I was used to not wearing my wedding ring and it applied when I was doing removals. So she asked if I was interested in filling out an application and she would be a reference for me as long as I got her the Resume on Sunday (I was there on Friday). She told me the salary and benefits which was better than being an Electrician. It was a no Brainier and my Mother-in-law did my resume and I hand delivered it to her and she filled in the Blanks for me and added herself as a reference. They were hiring 2 people and after getting the job I was told that close to 300 applicants applied. I was shocked but appreciated after 5 interviews and all kind of background checks (State/Federal/Drugs etc. When I got hired I just missed the State training for the position I applied for and was ready to go in 4 months I believe. I am a hands on guy, if you show me hands on first and then I read after why and what I did made since by learning backwards. If I had to do it the true way, school then remember what the books said to do I will be honest it would of been a no go after my Probation period. So there are 2 thing's or people I am grateful to make this dream job (salary and Benefits wise). The girl that refereed me was a model employee so her reference was great, But her mother worked for Public Safety (Who was the agency that oversaw the Medical Examiners Office along as the State Police etc) So her mom made a call on her daughters request which basically moved my resume to the top and a guarantee interview! Well as I said previously 5 interviews took place and they were intense. I was told by my Boss on the last interview in the elevator ride down that the 4 interviews previous were aced and this last one was to ask me the same questions in a different format to see if everything matched up! He said that they have a scoring system to confirm your honesty and from what he was adding up during that I was hired verbally but give him a week to call me to confirm. After getting hired the girl that gave me the reference etc, worked in the Worcester office and was covering Boston for that weekend only and I was at the right place and right time. We had a meeting and I had a card to thank her etc, so when I seen her at the meeting she saved me a seat and was suprised to see a wedding ring on me and admitted to me she was hoping that we could of gone out for drinks. LOL" We ended up being partners during part of my training and developed a Professional and great work relationship.2 months in my learning and fear working with all these instruments and notes/dictating everything I did, my boss came into the Autopsy room and said Joe what College did you go to? I said I graduated from a Vocational school and never went to College. He embarrassed me in-front of 2 Doctors and 3 Co-Workers which didn't sit too well with me. I said to my Boss that I will finish what I have to do and wanted to meet in his office after, He said why and I said because you made me look like an A-Hole and I want to know if this is going to be how things are done here? He said I needed to pass 26 test's and obtain 16 licenses before my probation period or I am out of a job. I was furious and humiliated, the support of all that saw this backed me 100% and said that after our work is done we will all go meet the Boss. I was so relieved, One of the Doctors said do you have Vacation time accrued, I said yes Doctor. He said that in 2 weeks he is taking 3 weeks off and teaching and consulting and asked if I could stay in Rhode Island for 2 weeks to learn what was needed to surprise my boss that I did it and that his intimidation was ineffective. I said what about your family, He said that they were going Home to visit family (Russia) and that he believes in me and if I can stay with him we can achieve the goals needed! I was overwhelmed and said Doc. I will pay you but immediately he said that being his assistant since I was hired, he was impressed but never showed any emotion or complimented me for a job well done. He said that this will be an even exchange if you accept my offer. Again I am hand on and what an opportunity, plus the embarrassment motivated me because this was to stay between me and the Doctor. So I did comply with the Doctor and he taught during the day 4 days a week and I sat in and took notes and with his near perfect qualifications, he had a Consultant company to do Autopsies for families who wanted to be 100% why there loved on passed away. Every death has to be reported to the Medical Examiner except for terminal illness and when a Physician is willing to sign the Death Certificate due to the persons medical history and age along with the responding Police confirms that no foul play and there medications are accountable and no forced entry. Quite a few people aren't happy with the doctor saying your loved one passed because of 20 years of h...Expand for more
eart disease and they are on oxygen and smoke and don't watch what they eat. So they are willing to pay $10-$14 thousand dollars for a private Autopsy, so what was taught in the Doctors class he would show me that evening the how/why and what caused there demise along with removing all organs and learning whats normal and what's not. So what I received was more education than my co-workers which allowed me to become a Forensic Investigator and earn my badge b because of this Doctor. I was the 3rd person in the Office to earn my badge because everyone never wanted to go to school after 12 hr days. But the Doctor was able to apply credits to a degree which got me where I am today. The best thing was that I passed 15 out of 16 tests and the 16th test was taken on a Thursday and I had one chance to pass the test within a month. I got a call along with the entire class saying that there was a glitch and that we actually passed. So I shocked my boss and became a Supervisor with under 2 years working and the next senior employee had 15 years and because of the Doctor I was the only one qualified but had to test to earn the position and I did so, In ending everything is obtainable, but you have to want it bad and need some motivation to persevere. For me it was being embarrassed and not letting the Doctor down and then letting myself down (I was actually 3rd in the prove that I am capable to stay) When you should always put yourself first, everyone has there way of learning. For me it's backwards meaning hands on and then the how/why and what needs to happen in-order for us to look in a certain area. I know this was long but the whole story is true and when an opportunity presents itself at-least try your best and if it don't pan out then you gave it your all and should move on or keep working at that particular position until you get there. Just never think that something you know nothing about is out of your reach! If you don't stand in the batters box then you will never get a swing in. I hope 1 or all who reads this can grab some inspiration in regards to not being afraid to take a chance. Sincerely Joe I always wanted to be a Person of Honesty when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a Responsible idea. As it turns out, they were Correct because I am proud to be a good friend and Husband. Play Guitar, Depending on the issue if time is needed to cool down that's fine. But I always try to revisit the issue because I have learned that Communication is the Key to every aspect of who and how you are looked upon. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a clear head, I believe that if I give 100%, and not afraid to ask questions to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My Grandfather (Personal), Walter Cuffe who was my Boss and Mentor who instilled the most important values needed to work in the Funeral Business and remember to carry them outside of work. My Grandfather taught me values of respect and that we all Bleed Red and nobody is better than the other. Yes there are people who have skills that you or I don't share but in the end we are people! The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Mark Gaudet, because He is the one who pushed shy Joey to ask Kim for her number, 20 years ago. He passed from cancer and 3 weeks after I saw him in the hospital (He told me that the Doctor told him they are at the end) I told him that I would trade places with him if I could, he asked why? I said I had 20 perfect years because of you and you haven't even been married so I would love to see you receive the Happiness I have because of you. I meant that 100% swear to god.. New England fan of all sports, but a Die Hard Bruins Fan. I have 2 dogs who are like my children and they give you that unconditional love that nobody can compare it too. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel Nothing because that was done 6 years ago and add on a If I had to add something it would be a bathroom on the 3rd floor. My dream home would be the house we have but more land.. Unfortunately we have no Children, not because of any reason! We got married in 1996 and about 2 years after a parent was diagnosed with a terminal illness at a young age, then another one a year after, then another, then my best friend my grandfather and 3 very close friends 2 by cancer and one was hit but a Drunk Driver. Since 1996 we have been on the every 2 year someone ver close to us has passed, it has slowed down but now we both will be 40 we are happy with what we have and spoil every one else s kids. You never know and it's not 100% out of the question and neither is adoption which we both think giving a home to someone who was given up is better than bringing someone into the world at our age now. For some reason I think either a summer home or a boat is in the future if no kids. If I won $100 million, I'd give sum of it to family and friends, then spend the rest on Dream house, Charities and help people who we don't know anything until we ask questions knowing they are working 2-3 jobs to support there family. My current age is 39. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old. I was so completely wrong. Attendance, work as if it was your own company and be a team player. My best friend would tell you I'm everything I wrote, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as generous. My style is simple, sports shirts, Shorts all year if possible. If not then running pants and sweatshirts that are sports orientated. I share my home with My Wife, who is awesome. I was a Professional bowler for 10 years with a 118 average (Candle pin) been on TV 5 times. I was once ranked as a Professional Dart Player. I volunteer at a local Nursing Home which is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. In 10 years, I hope to be Alive. I'm going to get there by Exercising and eating well as I have been for some time.. Karen Card, we went to school together and still are Best of Friends. What do I enjoy about Karen? She is Smart, Trusting, Great Listener with good advice, Great Single Parent (To a very handsome and talented, educated young man) She is coming to stay with us next week and I cant wait to see her again. You couldn't ask for a better friend because she is the total package you want from a friend. I would take a bullet for her. I respect Karen and can count on her as she can count on me at anytime. My first job was at Stop & Shop, where I got paid 8.00hr to 9.50hr. What I remember most about it is a-hole boss. Growing up and being accepted with an older group of kids at Ames Park. It was like an extended family and everyone looked out for my best interest. Today I am grateful to all of the 30 Plus group of friends.
