Joe Byrd:

CLASS OF 1961
Aurora, CO

Joe's Story

My father sold his company during the fall of my senior year, and our family moved to Lufkin, Texas right after I graduated in 1961. I spent two years at the University of Colorado (Delta Upsilon fraternity) majoring in Arts & Parties before transferring to college in Texas. I graduated from Stephen F. Austin University in 1967 and was privileged to receive an appointment to Navy Officer Candidate School that summer. After OCS, I married my college sweetheart (big mistake; divorce in 1970) and spent six months at Supply Officer School in Athens, Georgia and three years active duty on the USS Delta, a Pacific Fleet Repair Ship. After serving seven years of military active duty and reserve time, I settled in Atlanta, Georgia to work as a planner for the Transit Authority. During the 70s, I went to grad school at Georgia State University and got an MBA. I spent my career mostly in the Marketing Research field and took eight years off along the way on the faculty of a private liberal arts college while persuing a PhD at the University of Memphis. I left the academic world in 1993 (without the PhD) and went back to the business world. The last twelve years were spent with U...Expand for more
PS at the Corporate HQ in Atlanta. I managed the research for the UPS Store; retired in 2006. Sandi, my wife of 39 years (BIG success), and I live in the country north of Atlanta close to the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are blessed to have both of our daughters (and 5 grandkids) close by. We can't believe that our oldest grandson is graduating from at Georgia Tech this spring (we also have a grand daughter at Davidson College in North Carolina). Where did the years go? I loved growing up in Aurora and my four years at Aurora High, but did not appreciate it at the time as much as I should have. I have many fond memories -- Young America football and baseball; getting beat up daily in freshman and JV football; our great gymnastics team (two trips to Florida, Coach Don Robinson); Trojanaires; my History Teacher Mr. Bob "Chief" Johnson; great friends; beautiful girls; and a few severe crushes. I regret losing track with so many of my classmates for so long. If I could go back in time, for starters I would be there for my good friend, classmate, and folk singing partner Joe Jackson who died of cancer about eight years ago. ' hope to hear from my classmates again. 1/31/2011
