Joe's Story
Life
Hey there one and all. I'm the proud dad of three charming girls (ages 16, 14, y 11). I'm divorced and now living in the heart of Escondido, California. It is dreadful here. After 12 years in sales at a postproduction company, I am now a substitute teacher. It's loads of fun and then some. I'm into collecting 1955 Bowman Football Cards and Knott's Berry Farm memorobilia. I often think about Thousand Oaks High School, Westlake High School, Colina Intermediate School, Meadows Elementary, and all of the fun we had...or didn't have. What's up with the 30 year reunion? If anyone is in to Knott's Berry Farm memorobilia, regardless if we went to school together, please contact me. I love Knott's Berry Farm! In fact, I really can't get enough of it. Well, I suppose I could. Also, if anyone has heard from Jesse Camarillo, please contact me. I hear he loves Knott's too. In fact, I hear his favorite ride is the Calico Mine Ride. The last person I bumped into from high school, other than at a reunion, was Jeff Lawrence. He was in a green truck. I was on foot. He didn't have time to talk, but if he did, I would have invited him to Knotts. That would have been fun. Anyone hear from Jeff lately? Please let me know. My therapist is recommending I track him down to improve my mental health. In any event, if you're ever in Escondido, stop by the Wild Animal Park and try to find me. I'm ussually hiding in the bushes by the Gorilla exhibit. Don't ask! I'd love to chat.
School
Biggest crush: Pam Day (WHS)...followed by (in no particular order): Amy O'Hara (WHS), Julie Grandpre (WHS), Marlyn Kind (WHS), some hippie girl whose name I can't remember (WHS), Kim Anderson (Colina y WHS), Julie Richman (WHS), Jody Cox (WHS), Cheryl Marshall (WHS), Rena Lavin (Meadows Elementary), Susan Mulholland (Meadows Elementary), Karen Johnson (Colina), Kelly Bogush (TOHS), and Michelle Costello (WHS).
Which teacher(s) inspired me most: Dan McDermott (WHS), Nick Vrakelos (WHS), Don Shotliff (TOHS, WHS), Gay Ausmus (Colina, TOHS, WHS), and the entire football coaching staff (TOHS, WHS).
If I could do it all over again: I'd take my studies a little less seriously.
Funniest moment: Plenty to choose from, but one of my favorites was when a substitute teacher in an English class at Westlake High School called us a bunch of animals. We were reading a play that took place in the American South. I did a Southern accent. Andy Arthur than decided to do a pirate accent. It went downhill from there. The sub said, "You're all a bunch of animals!" For some reason, I had a pig mask in my coat pocket. I put it on, she screamed, and went to get ...Expand for more
Mr. Wilson. Jeff Moore grabbed the mask and started running through the hallways. Mr. Wilson stopped him and took Andy, Jeff, and I oustide. He said, "You three are leaders and those students in there are stupid enough to follow you." Pretty funny stuff.
Happiest moment: This is a tough one, but I guess it would have to be when I sacked the Santa Paula quarterback two and one-half times during the '79 game against the Cardinal. I even got to raise the victory flag after the game. Coach Contreras put me in against the Santa Clara Saints the following week. They ran an option play to my side for a twelve yard gain. I was pulled immediately, but I appreciate that the Coach gave me a shot.
Another happiest moment: Do you recall when Coach Elliot let us run onto the field after Bill Turner (I think) missed a field goal for Newbuy Park securing Thousand Oaks High School the win and us the Marmonte League title...us being Thousand Oaks High School.
Another happiest moment: Yes, I was part of the first Westlake High School mile relay team. After being soundly beaten in the 300m high hurdles (I think the three Newbury Park runners who finished ahead of me were already in their sweats by the time I crossed the finish line), my teammates and I got ready for the mile relay. One of Newbury Park's runners was injured, so they put in a substitute. But, hey, they were all seniors and we were three juniors and a sophomore (Greg "Groucho" Marx, Mike Fassel, Scott Legal, and myself). Anyhoot, we beat them soundly thanks to a great final lap by Legal. One of the guys on the Newbury Park team threw a fit. It was pretty funny.
Craziest school memory:
College
I didn't bother with the SAT test or any other preparatory action for college, so I wound up at Moorpark JC...for six years. It was a proud day when I graduated and headed off to California State University, Fresno. I bumped into a few Ventura County folk including Andy Fung, Steve Fairman, Dan Kreske, and others that I can't remember. I got to manage the college radio station which was a hoot. In fact, I'd probably still be at CSUF if the college board hadn't decided that all grads (regardless of catalogue year) would have to pass Intermediate Algebra. The got me moving to graduate in 1988.
Military
One time at Colina, Jim Cusworth and Don Dutton signed me up for the Navy (through one of those ads in Scholasatic magazine). They, they being the Navy, called my house and asked for Joe Leggett. My older brother, Sam Leggett, told the recruiter that my dad already served in the Navy and that I was only 13 at the time. That's the closest I've ever gotten to military service.
