Joe's Story
Life
Hey Y'all! Things are great down here in San Antonio, Texas. In the middle of the winter, the average temp is between 50 and 60 degrees. I always hated the cold. I used to be cramped up in a recording studio for 16 hours a day. It used to kill me. Owning your own company is no skip in the park. Stress, expenses, people who don't pay you, lack of sleep, lack of eating, did I say expeses?. Who needs it?
I'm now a Dueling Piano player. I work about 15 hours a week. My biggest work stress is learning songs and keeping my voice healthy. If you're ever in San Antonio, come see me at the Howl At The Moon Saloon on the riverwalk. It's a lot of fun.
Workplace
During my senior year at Mainland, I had an early morning paper route with 300 customers. I worked in the paint dept. at Woolco. Then in 1980, I got a job as a valet parking attendant at Resorts International in AC. I moved to Boston in 1984 and got a job with a parking garage, full time, while attending the Berklee College of Music. After gra...Expand for more
duation, I was hired to run a parking garage accross town with the same company. Three years later I became a bartender. I started buying recording equipment while in college. I kept building my recording studio set up; which I had in my apartement. While bartending, I was able to continue building my studio and started advertising for business. My home studio got so busy, I had to move to a commercial facility. I stopped bartending and became a self employed, full time recording engineer/producer. I recorded over 75 CD's for different artists in the Boston area. I joined the faculty of The Arts Institiute Of Boston. I instructed students on the various techniques of recording. Working in my own studio and teaching added up my work hours to almost 100hrs a week. It was killing me. A friend that I graduated college with convinced me to teach myself the piano and move to Texas. I learned to play the piano and sing. I play 200+ nights a year at a dueling piano/sing-a-long club. It's the best move I ever made.
