Joe's Story

Life I have been quite busy since high school, and I am fairly satisfied that I have lived my life by that whole road-less-traveled thing. Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be a writer. And since every great writer, it seems, was at one time a nomad (research), I guess you could say that I've sort of followed in that tradition. In the last twenty-eight years, I have served in the army, lived all across the country, written and directed over ten plays, worked every kind of job imaginable, studied in England, got a degree, tried to learn guitar, sold the guitar, got married, got divorced, worked as a deckhand on a commercial fishing boat (to forget the marriage), got married again (to forget the fishing-boat experience), tried the corporate thing with a Corporate 100 company (man, that was stupid), and rounded it off nicely with a novel, which, oddly enough, reads rather like non-fiction. I've been working on a second novel the last couple of years - even though I haven't done anything with the first one - and now that I have a job worth going to, working late at night on a book that might never be read seems to get harder and harder. But, I do love it so. I still reside in Las Vegas with my wife Michelle, my baby boy Jack (he's three years old and the cutest kid I've ever seen) and...Expand for more
our dogs Zoe and Baby. I'm still trying to convince my wife that living in South America would be kind of cool. Research, you know . . . College My years at UMASS-Amherst can best be described by one word: tired. Being married, working two jobs and carrying a full load will do that to you. Other than getting three hours sleep a night, my college experience was everything I hoped it would be. I made a lot great friends, all of them, it seemed, members of garage bands, studied under some of the best professors anywhere, and graduated magna cum laude; I also won a scholarship and studied at Oxford University, England. Not bad for a guy ten years older than the average in-coming freshman, and who graduated 222 in a senior graduating class of 256. Just trying to prove to my pop that I wasn't the dumb-ass he thought I was, and which my three years at Saddleback seemed to suggest. Military A great choice for me because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do right out of high school. But it also gave me a chance to see the world, and to share that experience with guys from every walk of life. I served as a crew chief on UH-1 helicopters, managed to crash twice in three years, and almost got shot down along Korea's 38th parallel. That aside, the best friends I ever had were the guys I met in Korea. Hoo-ah!
