Joe's Story
I became a writer after leaving St. Mary's, and after many years of bouncing around, working as a tool grinder,and piano player (When I wasn't gainfully unemployed),I stumbled into teaching, first at various art programs in Jersey, and now as a professor at Binghamton University (SUNY). I never much liked teachers when I was in high school. Come to think of it, I never much liked high school, but I recently returned to St. Mary's to film an NJPBS profile on my life as a poet, and I was happy to see Mr. Brennan was still there, teaching gym. a sort of farm in Vestal, New York-- 4.5 acres of land, and it's a long way from Elizabeth, but I visit once and awhile when my readings bring me to the area. I'd like to hear from some former class mates, most especially Jimmy Obergfell, Tim Mcguire, and Bobby Gomulka. I probably won't, but I figured it was worth a shot.
I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was an impractical idea. As it turns out, they were both right and wrong. I'm a writer. I'm happy being impractical. Wouldn't have it any other way.
