Joe's Story
Life
After High School I studied a year at American River JC and then a year at De Anza JC in Cupertino. After that I got a job in computer programming. A few years later I quit work so I could practice personal growth full time for 18 months; it helped raise my self esteem. After that I went back into computer programming. I'm a database designer and procedure writer. Like most programmers, I've changed jobs often through the years, but always in the Bay Area.
In '93 I met and married Elizabeth, a transplanted east-coaster, also in Information Systems. Our daughter was born in '97; she attends college, class of 2020. We own a home in the East Bay Area.
I'm not religious in a traditional sense, but I practice my own form of spirtiuality.
BTW: I'm the younger brother of Sally Newton and Nancy Newton, also from Ponderosa, in case you know them.
School
K-8th at Gold Oak Elem. I remember working in the cafeteria, faking it but not making it in band class, playing on the football team, and playing lots of dodge-ball, soccer and tag. I also remember an ...Expand for more
interesting trip to hear a classical concert in Sacramento, and a fun trip to San Francisco.
4 Years at Ponderosa. I was mostly a quiet guy but occasionally I'd throw out a zinger or a pun. I missed all the social activities; didn't date or go to dances, didn't join groups. I liked Math, Science, P.E., English and French; I didn't enjoy History, Social Studies, or Shop Class. Some teachers were hard, others were inspirational.
After high school I went to one year at American River JC, Placerville Campus for general ed., then moved to the Bay Area and Studied Computer Science at De Anza Community College in Cupertino. Then I got a job as a computer programmer and quit school.
I sometimes regret not getting a degree, but most times I think it didn't make much difference. I often regret that I didn't make stronger personal connections and get more involved in social activities. But I did have a few close friends that I enjoyed long conversations with, and a few others that I joked with a lot. And life moves on and we continue to grow, thank goodness.
