Joel's Story
When I entered Mayfield in 1973 as 14 year old Sophmore I stood a whooping 5'1 and weighed almost 100 pounds.
Three years later in 1976 when I graduated I was 5'7 and around 130 pounds. I had just gotten my pro license in motocross and started racing all over the USA. I raced in the Houston Astrodome the New Orleans Superdome. I raced from California to Florida to Montana and so many states in between. 4 surgeries 2 concussion, 2 broken nosesand quite a few stitches later, in 1980 I decided to try a sport I had always been Interested in, but my parents would not let me do. I took up Boxing at 22 years old. I had my first amateur boxing match at 22. Everyone told me I was to old, to nice, to easy going to be a boxer. Well 5 state championships, 4 trips to the regional and 1 trip to the 1984 nationals in St. Louis where I...Expand for more
fought the number 2 ranked light heavyweight in the nation I decided to turn professional.
I got to make my professional debut right here in Las Cruces at the Pan American Center on May 5th 1985. It was awesome I stopped my opponent from New York in the 1st round.
When I finished Boxing I decided to take up marathons and triathlons. I ran the Boston marathon. I completed the Ironman triathlon twice, for 41 years of my life I got to experience some awesome moments.
Of all the sports moments the one I hold closest to me is the moment I was able to donate one of my kidneys to one of my boxing buddies who had lupus. It gave him 2 sons and a little over 20 more years of life.
He passed away on January 18th 2021, leaving behind 2 sons 9 & 17.
I thank God for the amazing life he's given me. Looking forward to what remains.
