Joella's Story

School I started Kindergarten at Harrison Elementary. My teacher's name was Mrs. Wrightings. I attended Harrison from Kindergarten to the first week of the B-2 semester. My mom moved to Stone Street and I then started attending, Malabar Street School. I attended Malabar from 1960-1965. I graduated from Malabar in June of 1965. My teachers at Malabar were: Mrs. Diamond, Mrs. Hobbs, Mrs. Teel, Mr. Yip, Mr. Levy, Mrs. Callison, Mr. Baltic and Mr. Ferrell. I had lots of great friends at Malabar and I loved that school. I loved the huge play areas. Does anyone remember "Up the Galley" and "Down the Galley"? I entered Belvedere Junior High School in the Fall of 1965. I was a "scrub". Had a great B-7 Semester at BJHS then my mom moved to Baldwin Park for a year and so I attended Landis Intermediate. We then moved back to L.A. and I re-entered Belvedere Jr. High in my A-8 Semester and stood at BJHS until I graduated in June of 1968. My graduating class name was The Thesians Class of Summer 1968. Royal Blue and White were our colors. I had many great friends at Belvedere. Many of us split up as we went to different High Schools. I entered Theodore Roosevelt High School in September of 1968. I never looked back after that. Roosevelt was great. I met a lot of people there and made lots of new friends. I was active in many clubs, drill team, cheerleading and class councils. Some of my favorite teachers at Roosevelt were, Mrs. Simpson, Mr. Dawson, Mr. Foxworth, Mr. Drye and Mr. Kendricks.............. If I could do it all over again, would I? Hell Yes!! .............. Who could forget, first drill team performance, 40-0, City Championship game against Gardena, The Walkouts, Last Drill Team Performance at ELAC 1970, Ditching, Driving around in Miss Williams "Bug" with Bertha and Norma, Senior Ditch Day when more than half the school was absent and showed up at the same park as our class........... One of the funniest moments occured at our Senior Talent Show when George Burwell, The Eaton Brothers, Ray Paniaqua (someone else but I forgot who) got up to sing, The Temptations song. Those high falsetto voices coming out from these big guys busted up the whole auditorium! They sang great but no one expected that performance from them................ My happiest moment was leadin...Expand for more
g our drill team onto the field at ELAC for our last performance at a Roosevelt-Garfield Halftime Show. We performed to Santana's, Jingle and Evil Ways. We were the best band and drill team on the field that night. The excitement of the crowd, the music, our performance, the RHS crowd participation will always bring a smile to my lips! Another happy yet sad moment was Graduation Day. June 16, 1971. Graduation was at Cal State L.A.... happy to graduate but, sad because you realize that you will not see all your friends again. Everyone parts and goes their own way in life, some stay close, others lose contact, some lose their life and yet you remember them all!!!.............. One of the craziest moments I remember at Roosevelt was when the LAPD came onto campus dressed in full riot gear and started beating up kids that were trying to walk out!! The gates were locked and they couldn't walk out! There were police and students running all over campus!! I will never forget that scene!! A year after studying at ELAC (LOL), I got married to Ruben Balles. Married 8/5/72. We were married for 34 years. We have 3 children (2 sons and 1 daughter). All three of our children are married. We have 5 grandchildren (2grandsons and 3 granddaughters). My husband Ruben passed away unexpectedly on 7/21/06. I will always miss him. I am back in the work force and live alone. I have reconnected with so many friends from high school, junior high and elementary schools. It is great having them around. They are all still the same and we all act the same. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I still am a die hard Dodger Fan, Laker Fan, Kings Fan and USC Fan. I still love watching sports on TV. I love watching Track and Field and swimming events on TV but I miss all the track meets they used to show on TV and don't any more. Trying to re-adjust to living single again. It's harder than you think but with family, friends, my faith and love, I am doing well. I, along with others will be working on our 40 year class reunion in 2011. Hope to hear from all of you Pya Kangwalians out there. Here's to a great reunion and renewal of old friendships as well as new friendships! I have been blessed with a wonderful life. I thank my Heavenly Father every day for blessing me so!!
