Joseph's Story

Joseph is from Springfield Gardens, New York. Joseph's schools include St. Francis Preparatory, Susan B. Anthony Intermediate School 238, Ralph Bunche Public School 132. Joseph later attended Center for the Media Arts. Joseph works(ed) at Ultimate Sound & Installations, Inc. as an Operations Engineer, as well as a major portion of my adult life in the Banking & Financial Worlds; Three Years each with Bankers Trust Co, (Teller) and Marine Midland Bank (now HSBC, Platform Assistant and Assistant Operations Officer); and 8 years for Colson Services Corp., the Fiscal Transfer Agent for the US Small Business Administration, in the Cash Processing Dept, as a Lead Cash Control Clerk and Assistant to the Department Head for Special Projects and Administrative Duties. I basically worked with my boss in an attempt to bring the company's Accounting and Bookkeeping procedures into the modern world by coming up with PC based Spreadsheets, Documents, and Databases to get data directly from the Mainframe daily instead of filling out huge ledger sheets that needed to be hand run on calculators to find mistakes that were 99% of the time transcription errors involving between 1 and 100 Million Dollars a day depending on the time of the month. That was step 1, step 2 was contacting all banks that were sending their remittances each month on a computer generated form. We had been handling them as if the were handwritten with 1 item and needed a tape to be run to make sure the calculations were correct, except some of these big banks were submitting over 3000 remittances! I said "Um, if these computer forms are never wrong (3 Months of research back 5 years to prove no differences), then why should we make 1 clerk work for 1 1/2 hours proving it when there are lots of small ones to do that are making us work overtime? Secondly, if the data is already on a computer, why can't we have them send us a tape with the data, have 1 person in the Systems Department, parse out the important info and post the payments right to the Payment system saving someone on the Night Crew 5 hours of work hand posting them with a big chance of miskeying payments that then need to be gone over and found before we can submit a day as complete? A Couple of phone calls later and the Department and the Night Crew went from 31 days behind to in proof by 10 AM the next day and cut out 88% of Departmental Overtime. Step 3 was to contact as many banks as possible and request that instead of mailing checks & remittance forms that could take days to arrive from the west coast (we were in the Wall Street Area), they could wire the funds to our bank account and fax us the remittance forms. We could get a jump on tomorrow's work and on really busy days we could begin the work that usually started daily at 8:00 AM at the...Expand for more
bank's cutoff time of 6:00 PM the night before. 1 person would stay and do the overtime basically 5 days a month, and if you worked until 10 PM you got a Corporate Car Home! The SUPER advantage to this was when a SBA Loan was being paid off, we had only 72 Hrs to get it out to the Owners. If it was stuck in the middle of a pile of unlooked at faxes or on a big remittance because someone was rushing to get their work done and missed the Zero Balance on the form. and we MISSED the 72 Hr Deadline, Our Gov't Contract charged US with a 10% Penalty of the Total Amount of the Payoff each DAY! Considering the Average payoff was $300K+, that's somebody in my department's fault to the tune of $30,000.00 a Day. Jobs hung on missed payoffs. So the less little stuff and unnecessary stuff was left to human hands the more careful we could be about things like Mis-postings and Missed Payoffs that a little birdie told me saved the company over 1.5 Mil Operations Dollars/Year/ No wonder when I requested a new Laser Printer, one of the VPs of the company walked up to my desk and asked why. I replied... (Our current one prints 6 pages/Min. On the busiest days we have 250 Wires that each need a cover sheet. that takes about an hour. The new machine isn't color or anything else special that we don't need. it just Prints 20 Pages of Crisp Black a Minute. the whole 250 would be done in about 12 Minutes and get everybody started matching the remittances to the covers almost an hour sooner instead of waiting for a 7 year old Laser Printer to finish it's part." The response came in 3 sec. "Do It." was all I heard, then as he walked away, he stopped and said, "and I'll hand write for 4 color. I never know what you might come up with next.", smiling as he went back to his office. You make it worth their while and you'll always get what you need to do it. Joseph's interests include Golf, NY Mets, Jets, Islanders, Usain Bolt, Landon Donovan, Darrell Revis. One of Joseph's favorite quotes is:""Let Him Rave on that men shall know him Mad."
