John's Story
Well, I left Waterloo in 1983, on the trip to Europe with the choir between my sophomore and junior year, after 4 years of living in the town. Barb Boedges was our choir director.
I performed in Godspell and The Paper Chase, under the expert tutelage of Brent Lappin (who got fired, probably because he was too liberal for the town at the time).
My best friend, Jon Loehr, got killed in a car accident on July 3, 1983; I used to run with Ralph Stamm and Mike Jansen, and play D&D with them. Kirt Ormesher was one of my very best friends in the years between 1980 and 1983.
Other names I recall from those days: Darrel Ahne (and Donna), Dee Dee Hawkins, Jill Miller (of course), Steve Schaller, Carol Gleiber, Brian Pace, Margaret Marshall, Dan Nobbe, Connie Posey, Mike Close, Susie Wehrenberg, Joe Kunzelmann, Nettor Van Scoyck, Rhonda G...Expand for more
unn, Carrie Lane, Julie Feldker, Scott Gietl, etc. Darren Blandford gave me a black eye in 7th grade, on my first day of school, before he was shot and killed over a dope field a couple of years later.
After Waterloo, I finished high school in Washington DC suburbs (Woodbridge, VA), did college in Tucson, AZ, where I majored in Creative Writing and minored in Physics, then did grad school in Colorado (MA in TESOL), and then went overseas. For 3 years, I taught English in Nagasaki, Japan, then became a SCUBA instructor in Indonesia. Spent a year teaching college English in South Korea. I worked for awhile as a computer networking tech in Illinois (2001-2004), and then returned to grad school.
I earned a PhD in Geography from the University of Arizona in 2010, and I am now faculty at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA.
