John's Story
Life
I guess I have been a pretty busy gut since I left Huntington. In August 1965 I was unemployed and when Johnson said he was doubling the draft I enlisted in the Navy to avoid it. 23 years later I finally retired and then worked for the government for a year before going to work as a civilian contractor for the government installing electronic communications equjipment for them aboard Navy ships
and then retired from that after 15 years so I am now retired. I figured if they taught me to be an electronics technition then I would put it to use.I only returned home about 5 times while in the service. I was never stationed aboard a ship in my 23 years but I was in about 40 different countries over a span of 15 years living outside the U.S. being able to go to places like london, paris, rome, vienna,
athens and throughout europe far surpassed reading ab...Expand for more
out them in books. Of course I was also in some places like Ivory Coast,Senagal,Togo,Ethiopia, and Morroco also offset the good places. I was also able to spend 7 years in the Carribean and saw all the major Islands as well as places like Honduras, Costa Rico, El Salvador. I would never trade any of those experiences for anything. I met my wife
when I was stationed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland in 1968 and we have 5 kids. 1 boy and 4 girls. They are scattered all over the country from Maryland to Georgia to North Carolina to Chicago to Oklahoma. I currently live in Oklahoma and do nothing but grow vegetables in my little garden during the summer and help my son-in-law work his cattle ranch. Its hard to believe that at the age of 58 I
retired again in 2004 after winning my battle with prostate cancel to spend the rest of my life herding cattle.
