John's Story

Tell them who I am really? Hmmmmm...somedays I don't know the answer to that myself. I married Sherill Lynn Givens PHS '67 in 1968 and we resided in Huntington after attending Marshall. Sherry and I have one son, living in Winchester, KY. We divorced in 1973 and I married Lynda Turner in 1974. That one has lasted a little longer, 36 years this past July '09. Must be some truth to the practice makes perfect" adage. We have a daughter, living in Huntington. Lynda brought two children from her 1st marriage one who lives in Columbus OH, the other in Nashville. In 1991 we left WV for good, actually for the better opportunities in Nashville. It has been a wonderful, wild ride. I had what you might call a successful career with Kenworth of Tennessee. If your definition of successful is no divorces, no repossessions, no bankruptcies, no jail time! Lynda continued to teach until retirement in 2003. I was able to retire after KWTN was bought out in 2005. I've been an active motorcycle rider since my mis-spent youth and served as chaplain to several motorcycle organizations, as well as consulting or serving on several boards of civic and professional agencies during my 16 years at Kenworth. I graduated from the University of the South (Sewanee), School of Theology in 2007 and was ordained to the ministry in 2008. Lynda and I currently live in Gallatin TN and I am the rector of Our Saviour Episcopal Church. I've been an Episcopalian since birth and a Christian since forever ago, I wouldn't consider another faith or practice a different religion. king alcohol, dancing, and sex are all OK in moderation, and there is confession and absolution from those sins for those who slide past moderation. TBtG! I've been back to PHS for either 2 or three reunions, I remember the 10th and the 25th, I think I was at the 20th but can't remember for sure... Honestly, I do remember much of it and some pretty wonderful friends. Interestingly, this little bio. was at the request of Ginger (Stewart) Jenkins, who claims to hate most everything about High School. Here ya go GJ! I'm really pleased that some of our class has managed to keep in touch over the years. I appreciate the work that Bob Bennett, Lynda Davis, Rhonda Stone and a bunch of others are doing to try and keep us together in one fashion or another- a daunting task given how big a class we are. I'm thankful also for our phsclassof 67 website. Lots of wonderful information there. I'm still saddened by the loss of some good friends and several others with whom I was acquainted in our class, and I wonder if it's really true that Jeff Hughes had a sex change operation and is now an advocate for transgendered folks on the west coast, ( I saw that posted here a few years back), I don't know how good our lives are supposed to be, but I've made it 62 years now, done almost everything I've ever wanted to do, I've re-invented myself several times and been blessed to have a family that has allowed and supported me during those times. I've seen my family grow-up, grand-kids come along and the whole process begin anew. I don't think it gets much better than that on this side of the dirt. All is well. jb
