Major John L.'s Story

99% of the people that knew me during high school thought of me as a failure, drunk, doper, in general a person who could only exist with assistance from the state. They would be right! In 1868, me and a few others were out for a motorcycle ride. We went down US 23 and turned left on Gratiot. The was a Macomb County Deputy parked at the corner, I flipped him off. The race was on, according to the cop we topped out at 145 mph when we got to the curves I slowed down to 80 mph but it wasn’t enough I hit the guardrail at 80 mph. I flew 157 feet, when I started I was wearing colors, full leather, gloves and a helmet. When I stopped skidding my leathers and colors were gone, as well as the gloves. There was about a 3” hole ground in my helmet. My right leg was behind my right shoulder, right arm was bent at a right angle at the wrist. To make a long story short I had a double compound open fracture of the right shin, and a closed compound fracture of the wrist. The Deputy that was chasing me came to see me. When he told me to pull my head out of my ass because I was headed to jail or to the morgue in short order.! I moved to AuGres, Michigan I ended up managing my parents Motel and Cottage rentals. They bought the business with no experience what so ever. They were bleeding green rapidly. When the casts came off I went back to work hauling jet fuel, 7 days a week,, 18-20 hours a day. I was able to pay off the business. My parents wanted out so they moved to Arizona. I sold the motel and bought a small trucking company. That was ok but being gone 6 weeks at a time, got boring rather quickly. I started looking for a job that would have me home daily. I thought about being a cop. I sold the trucking company and started as a Special Deputy with the Ogemaw County Sheriffs office September 1, 1975 in West Branch Michigan. I was laid off the end of the fir...Expand for more
st year due to funding. I was asked back on January 1, 1976 as the division commander. I worked there until 1979, being laid off every year. I grew tired of being laid off so I blanketed everything west of the Mississippi with resumes, 107 to be exact. I received 96 affirmative replied all offering me a law enforcement position. I chose the LaPlata County Sheriffs office in Durango Colorado. I worked there 7 1/2 years promoted to patrol sergeant at the start of my second year, and a year later Senior Sergeant. In my time with LaPlata I received 25 Commendations including the Metal of Valor for carrying a burning woman from her third floor apartment. I decided to leave that agency and applied at the Alamosa County Sheriffs Office as Detention Captain. I served in that position for 7 1/2 years and was promoted to Major with the position as Undersheriff. I ended up putting in 23 years with Alamosa retiring January 13 2011. The first year of retirement was kind of different. It went from commanding 200 subordinates and dealing with 200 plus inmates to sitting at home watching tv. I imagine some of you are skeptics, but I have documentation of everything available for electronic transmittal if anyone wishes. I can understand your factoring in how someone went from a dirtbag drunk to a top cop. It is simple, for 18 years I was physically abused, beaten with extension cords, sticks, tree limbs etc on a daily basis. I was also told by my mother that I wasn’t wanted, that if the coat hanger would have worked I would have been aborted. In her spare time I was also told that I would never amount to anything, that if I was lucky I could be a ditch digger, or a garbage man. At 19 I woke up, I changed my depressed attitude to a positive I’ll show you attitude! I’ve been blesses so many times that I can’t count them all. I’ll get off my soapbox now.. So Mote It Be!
