John's Story
After finishing my grade 12, I enrolled at the University of Manitoba where I majored in English with a minor in French and Spanish. I subsequently transferred to the University of Winnipeg and completed my BA there. At the same time I was working on projects in theatre at the Manitoba Theatre School. I then was lucky enough to get into the York University Master of Fine Arts program in theatre from 1974 to 1976. I lived in Toronto for a year after that with my wife and then returned to Winnipeg when she got a teaching job. I survived doing theatre for a bit before being asked to teach theatre at the University of Winnipeg in 1978. I enjoyed the teaching and directed a major production for the program. I left the post to act for a season in Stratford, Ontario. at the Shakespeare Festival. It was an incredible experience in so many ways.
I returned to Winnipeg in 1980 and worked in theatre and as a waiter, the typical actor's job. By this time I was divorced and met an actress on a film shoot. Just like in Hollywood. We were married in 1983 a...Expand for more
nd moved to Calgary where there was more work in theatre at the time. I wiorked at Stage West and Theatre Calgary and had small parts in some films and TV shows. We spent four years there and returned after our daughter was born. I was hired to run the Actor's Showcase theatre school (now Manitoba Young People's Theatre) and teach drama. I left that job after a year to freelance and directed some plays in Winnipeg and at Winnipeg Beach in the summer. I was forced to try other jobs as well because the arts can be a very hand to mouth existence at the best of times. What else did I do? I sold newspaper ads, sold frozen seafood and gourmet meats, sold one vacuum, worked in a pet store, waited tables and sold Volvos.
I decided to go back to university and attended the Collège universitaire de Saqint-Boniface studying French and translation. Before I even finished my program they offered me sessional teaching and I have been here ever since. Now I am on a tenure-track at the ÃÂcole technique et professionnelle which is like Red River College.
