John's Story

I went to Northwest Catholic High school (1966), the United States Naval Academy (marine engineering), Fairfield University (BA psychology, 1970), University of Hartford (MA experimental psychology, 1972) and SUNY Stony Brook (PhD developmental psychology, 1975). I taught at Emory University and Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Virginia Tech and at Butler University 1988-2021. I served as the W.A.Dunn Professor of Psychology 1994-2021. Was department head 13 years. Hired the whole department. I got to write, do my research with my students and just teach my classes. SInce 2006, I and my lab of undergrads put out 148 papers and 32 theses. March, 2014 I gave the Seigel-Wallston address for the Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) which met in Nashville. SEPA awarded me their science best papers award (2007) and their Mentor award (2020) and then elected me their president for 2021 -2023. I used to bring my students to SEPA to present their research as undergrads. It happened again for the SEPA annual meeting in 2022 but this time my students and co-authors were the honored plenary speakers! Retirement happened 2/1/2021 and outside of a single sabbatical year (2000-2001), this was the first year I have not had my lab nor taught a class in 48 years. Weird. In 2015 my children and I presented a couple of papers with all our names on it -- a Bohannon cubed series of reports on the syntactic markers of sex and violence in novels. Using our syntactic markers you now can have your computer scan digitized novels to pick out the good parts without having to read the entire book yourself. Thus, we contributed our part to the decline of western civilization. I am so proud. I also coauthored a paper with a physicist from Princeton named Einstein. OK, Lisa Einstein not Albert but still cool! My work is cited in intro psych and developmental texts. The 10th edition of my text (with many other authors) on language development came out in March 2022. The 10th edition has a former student co-author. I also have a chapter (2017) on how social membership and event consequences determine your autobiographical memories. However, I am now officially retired after 46 years of employed professing. What shall I do? Oh yeah. Be an ex-president ... what were they thinking?. 2 Children - John IV and Catherine. JNB4 got his doctorate in molecular biology (genetics) from Oxford (2001), then stayed in Europe as a science journalist. He had a column in the journal "Science" also spent a year in Berlin as a Fulbright Scholar at Freie Universitat. He lived in Vienna for a while traveling the globe doing research. Eventually, he returned to the states as a guest scholar/faculty at Harvard but has since moved to San Francisco for warmer weather. His research has thrice made the cover of Science. His article on Scientific fraud in journals (journals were frauds, not the authors) was named the most influential paper in Science for 2014. He published an intentionally bad paper on weight loss and chocolate. That phony finding got 1.5 million hits in 6 weeks. He started and runs th...Expand for more
e "Dance your Dissertation" competition for Sigma Xi (the Science people) and an article of his made Stephen Colbert eat cat food on the Colbert Report. John also made friends with Isabella Rossellini and made several documentary movies with her about odd reproductive behavior in animals called "Green Porn." Google "bohannon TED" if you want to see him give his TED talks. He currently has his own WIKI page so you can read a current bio and list of his accomplishments. Now, he is the science director of an AI firm that does natural language processing. He contracts with the alphabet guys now (DoD, CIA, NSA, etc.) Cool work if you can get it. The boy stops in to see his Dad for a visit and gaming on his way to Washington, DC, when he has to chat with the alphabet guys. Good times for the Dad. Katie published her first book (of poetry) when she was 15. Her first blog on APPLE's website began intriguingly, "The first time my father killed me I was 5..." Later in the blog the reader finds the homicide occurred in a D&D game. Yes, she went through a stage but has since writen more fundable fare. She taught freshman composition at U Arizona with her MFA but later joined Columbia University to get her PhD in English/ Psychology. On the way to her doctorate, Columbia University awarded Katie 3 more masters degrees. She wrote a book published in Oct '23 by Random House (A.E. Knopf) and a bunch of other publishers in 6 different languages. Her advance against royalties was in the millions. The book is "Eve: 200 million years of the evolution of the female body." It was published with a big promo push (Daily Show w/Sarah Silverman. You can see it by googling: Cat Bohannon YouTube. Choose the 15 minute version. It's a hoot.). Book fairs, conference visits, here she comes. Clearly, it is better to hit the talk show circuit as Dr Bohannon when touting her science-type book. Her book is a NYT bestseller and is up for a bunch of awards as well. Katie finished up at Columbia, successfully defending her dissertation and received her DPhil (Columbia, like Oxford's highest degree is not a PhD but the elder equivalent, the D.Phil). Katie got married in March 2016 to a nice programmer who worked for Google then Apple and they live in Seattle. Over the course of finishing her Doctorate and writing her book, Dr Katie Bohannon gave birth to two children! Her brood are now 4.5 and 3 yrs old. They both started reading at 3 and now the elder kid enjoys solving math equations (seriously? Yup... who knew?). The 3 yr old girl is also reading on her own... and has discovered that smiles and helping Mom gets her more attention than shrieking fits... The development is abrupt and startling. Worse, the girl is exceedingly cute and eventually teen male hearts will speed up in her presence. I wish them a speedy recovery. I am unsure about what I should be more proud: Being a dad of two DPhils or being a grandfather twice over. Ok, in spite of my lack of participation in any of their achievements, academic or reproductive, I shall bask in the refulgence of their accomplishments. Huzzah!
