John's Story

Life Full-on Robot timeline ... Born/Raised in Manhattan Beach (mom still lives in the same house on Duncan Av) Robinson -> Center -> Mira Costa -> USC Took up tennis because it was cheap, and there were lots of open courts – played from sun-up to sun-down for a few years – then came Connors and McEnroe, and everybody started playing … Started bowling in high school, signed up for some leagues, met a girl there, her brother-in-law was ranked 1st on the A-ladder in the El Segundo Tennis Club – we spent the next few years knocking each other off the top of the rankings Met another girl at the bowling alley – moved in with her (El Segundo) – had a daughter (my 1st, her 3rd) - moved to Torrance – moved to Riverside – broke up, moved in with a female coworker (Anaheim) – daughter moved in with us, bought a condo together in Orange daughter Heather turned 19 in 2002 and moved to PA to live with a tattoo artist she met in a chat-room (he couldn't come get her cuz his PO said no) - they have "pet" vipers that live in Tupperware under the bed League bowling (booked 201 in '89), league 8-ball & 9-ball, league softball, municipal club tourney golf (won my version of the Tiger-slam at Anaheim Hills GC= 2005 club champ, 2005 Member/Member champ, 2006 Presidents Cup (match play) -- not bad for taking up the game 3 years ago) Enjoy a nice bike ride along the Santa Ana river, all the way from Corona to Long Beach and back Dabble in a variety of art: photography, watercolor, acrylic, ceramic, neon, egg sculpture, iv...Expand for more
ory (fossil!) School Manhattan Beach, CA Robinson -> Center -> Mira Costa 800 on the math SAT Senior Class MATH department award from MCHS faculty (which struck me as odd, since I didn't take any math that year - my circle of friends was off at El Camino taking CALCULUS while I was taking AERONAUTICS at RUHS) between junior & senior years, I was selected to participate in a National Science Foundation program for gifted math students - 8 weeks of accelerated math classes at San Diego State - it was a geek vacation! College Tried to get into the Air Force Academy, but I didn't have the eyes - they offered up a full ROTC scholarship to any college I could get admitted into ... Tried to get into MIT, but applied too late - the freshman enrollment was full settled for USC - ROTC scholarship required 2 years active duty + 2 years reserve service after graduation - after my 1st semester, that requirement was changed to 4 + 2, then after the 2nd semester it went to 4 + 4 --- that probably wouldn't have been so bad, but I was totally unprepared for higher learning (having been able to skate thru my 1st 12 years of school, i didn't know how to study when I got to college) --- I dropped out and became a tennis bum (but I have my HONORABLE DISCHARGE) UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2023 had a stroke while playing golf - not a golf stroke, but a brain stroke (I do not recommend having one) -- couldn't grip a golf club, went to ER, 7 days later had surgery to clear 90% blockage of my right Carotid artery --- gotta get ready for golf again next spring
