John's Story

I always wanted to be a LAWYER when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a GREAT idea. As it turns out, they were WRONG. I don't need to ever blow off steam. I don't let things bother me anymore. I never was wild in school. In hindsight, I really led a very boring life compared to kids today. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have patience, understanding, and will power to keep from choking the hell out of people to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero would be God. He is my inspiration to do the right thing always. I was attending Armstrong in 1968 and was in my sophmore year when I had to join the Marine Corps to avoid being drafted-my grade point average was low and I was fixing to get booted from college. If I joined rather than being drafted, I could have some choices in my future(schooling and the such). Viet Nam was at it's height then. I went through boot camp at Paris Island, infantry training at Camp Lejune, NC, aviation training/schooling at MemphisTN, and was assigned to MCAS Santa Ana, Calif as a jet and helicopter metalsmith. In 1970, I went overseas. I did my time and was honorably discharged in 1972. I was an E5 SGT. I wish now that I would have stayed in the Marine Corps and retired. I returned to Savannah upon discharge, met my first wife, got married, had John Jr, stayed married 11 years, and got a divorce(my fault-I was still imature). I was loving being single again, partying and in my prime. Single again, I wasn't ready to do it again anytime soon. However, I didn't stay single long before I married again. But this time around, over the years, I fell totally in love with my second wife. And wouldn't you know it, after 11 years, that one didn't work out either. Did you pick up on the fact that I was married to each one for 11 years? Umm! Something up with that. Me and her had 2 boys, Michael and Bobby. When it's all done and over with, me and both ex wives are friends. Me and all my boys are close to each other and it all has been a learning experience. The only regret that I would have is that I was too imature to be married when I married the first time. She was a good lady. My second was also. So, after 2 failed marriages, I dedicated my life to my work. Being single, I'm not tied down anywhere, so I started allowing my job to transfer me wherever they needed me. I left Savannah in about 2001, worked all around the Columbia, SC area( Winnsboro, Camden, York, Rockhill and transfered to Jacksonville FL in about 2004, where I am now. I'm about 1 1/2 years away from retirement and looking forward to it. I don't know where I might live after that. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is ANN ZIRKLE, because she was my first love. I admit that I am hooked on rea...Expand for more
lity TV. I like all cop shows, all court shows and embarrassingly, I like some chick flicks like Sleepless in Seattle. My favorite teachers in school were Mr Dingus, and Mrs Weigle. If I won $100 million, I'd give all of it to me, then spend the rest on me, me and me. Remember, I'm single. My best friend would tell you I'm honest, real, fair , but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as looking mean and unhappy. I share my home with a cat, Little Bit, a Maine Coon, , which I find to be my best friend.. I am a "little better than average" bowler. I have about 8 trophes. I earned several medals, ribbons, awards while in the Marine Corps. If I got one do-over, what would I do differently?Well, I've made more than my share of mistakes, but I don't have many regrets. I wish that I had been a better husband to my first wife, but if I hadn't married the second one, neither of my last 2 sons would have been born. I wish that I would have stayed in the armed forces and retired. I wish that I had applied my self to college and not wasted that opportunity. I wish I could live my high school days again. That was fun. But, mostly, I believe that God has had a plan for me all along. I've basicly lived a good life and I thank God for that. In 10 years, I hope to be married to Brooke Burke. I'm going to get there by winning the lottery. My first job was at Winn-Dixie, where I got paid $1.85 to bag groceries. What I remember most about it is the tips were great. Okay, I put it all out there. If you have any questions, ask me, I'll tell you. Update, as of 4/25/10- The last of October, I attempted to retire from Walmart after 10 years of service because I had began to hate going to work each day. I wasn't 62 quite yet, but will be in early May. I had some money saved because I had already retired from Piggly Wiggly in 2000 and went to work for Walmart. However, the retirement thing didn't work out well because it was premature. I was blowing through my savings because with no money coming in and just money going out, it will drain the kitty pretty quick. Plus, I had no health insurance and that isn't wise after having a heart attack, a stint inserted, a stroke, and, later, open heart quadruple bypass surgery. So, I went to work for the first company that I ever worked for in 1964-Winn Dixie in Florida. I had gotten really sick of being in upper management though at Walmart and being accountable for over 500 associates actions. So, since I'm going to start drawing social security soon, I accepted a job as a department, hourly paid, manager. It's 40 hours a week, which is like a part time job to me after working 60 to 70 hours a week for 38 years and getting paid a salary wage and not seeing nothing for the extra hours.
