John's Story
I would say that the most meaningful aspects of my life have been my roles of parent, counselor, teacher, and a Buddhist monk. I am fortunate to know the joy of becoming a parent to a couple of amazing daughters. They are a precious gift and have provided me with the opportunity to experience all of the struggles, joy, tears, laughter, and love of parenting. I now have two granddaughters!
Having the opportunity to turn my life around at the age of 22 (1984) and become recovering member of AA and NA, I was able to give back by becoming a substance abuse counselor. Believing I could help make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth through education, I later became a high school teacher. For eight years I had the privilege of teaching at Jordan High School in Long Beach, California. It was a great honor and joy. I carry my students with me in my heart, treasuring the lessons they have taught me.

journey eventually took me to Tibetan Buddhism. In August of 2005 I was ordained as a Buddhist monk at Gaden Shartse Monastery in India. I also had the blessing to become the director of the Gaden Shartse Cultural Foundation and facilitate two of the Gaden Shartse Monastic Tours.
After six years of monastic life, I have now returned to life as a layperson. I have started a nonprofit called the Way of Compassion Foundation. It is my hope that I can draw upon my life experiences to be of benefit to others. My personal mission statement is to help facilitate teachings in an accessible and practical way to help people live a meaningful life in accordance with their own principles and spiritual beliefs.
You can find me on Facebook under John Chophel Bruna. Or through the website of the Way of Compassion.
I hope all of you are healthy and happy. My very best thoughts and wishes to all of you and your families.
