John's Story

Life I retired from the Navy in November 2005 and am presently living in Edgewood, Maryland. My wife and I celebrated the birth of our son on Christmas Eve! School I went to East Fairmont High School from 1977 to 1981. I was not the most popular student there...pretty much set my own course of action and did what I wanted. I was too wild for elite groups like the National Honor Society, and found some of those groups boring. Yet I proved myself to be at least academically at or above the same level as the "beautiful people" of the day. The one thing I do regret about high school was that I did not go to the prom. I was kind of angry at the other kids for the way they treated me and my then-girlfriend, and I did not feel like going to a place where I did not feel welcome. Then again, I was only 17 and did not know as much as I do now...I should have rented the tux and gone anyway. College Oh, wow...I am amazed I even graduated! I was pretty smart...but like most of us I liked to party and drink, too. A lot of my wild ways caried over on the campus. Then, God began to deal with me...I just wasn't willing to listen at the time, even though I was involved with one of the campus ministries during my junior and senior years. In particular, I was involved with Iner-Varsity Christian Fellowship on campus from 1983 to 1985. Dale, Frank, and Debbie Dzielski were all good ...Expand for more
friends at that time along with a guy named Kelly George. We also attended an Assembly of God church in Bridgeport, West Virginia, where I had a good time and that was where God began dealing with me about my life and what I need to be doing. Workplace I worked for a short time here at Wilson Ford. It was a part-time job to help me pay my way through school. The guys I worked with were cool, but the economy was bad. It was not a pleasant day for the boss to tell me I was being laid off, no more than it was for me. I haven't heard from anyone since then the mid-80's...feel free to drop me a line sometime and I can fill you in how I am doing now! Note: If Ray Zographos (my old boss from Odin Construction) is around, tell him to drop me a line so we can chat sometime. Military I first joined the military in 1985. I started in the Air Force, then switched to the Navy. Most of my time as been on sea duty; I have seen and accomplished a lot during my career, thanks be to God. It was through the military God sent people to share the gospel with me and I started a walk that has sustained me for many years. I have no regrets about joining the military...I was able to fulfill a career and see many places I never would have otherwise. My favorite ports of call were England, Malta, and Turkey. Malta in particular is one port I would love to visit again if I have the chance.
