John's Story
Myself and my best friend Homer DeLa Garza joined the Army in Sept '61. I returned to Gary in '64. I worked at US Steel (44 Bloomer mill) for 10 years. I then moved to Phoenix, Az in '74. I worked for Sperry Corp for 16 years, then 12 years for Honeywell Corp after they purchased Sperry. I unfortunately never married - not for lack of trying. ve volleyball for 45 years). I retired from vb in 2019 due to a worsening spine. I hiked mountains for 30 years, but had to quit in 2013 - hips. I bowled most of my life, and bowled a perfect game in '97. We started bowling long ago at the lanes owned by Tony Zale at 5th Ave and Adams St in Gary! Those were fun days! I hate seeing what happened to Gary - which was a great city back until the '80's. So sad!
