John's Story

In 1963 I went to UBC and graduated with a B Ed. Degree in 1967, with a double major in Industrial Arts and an extra major in Physical Education. I continued to compete in track and field. I supported myself by lifeguarding at the pools and beaches of Vancouver and Burnaby and started the first surfboard manufacturing company in Canada (Gladiator Surfboards. I started teaching in Burnaby, first job was back at South. After two years teaching I had run into Carol Hooton (Class of 63) and we got married in 69, Carol who was a Registered Nurse and supported us during the first year of marriage, and I did a research MA degree back at UBC in Adult Education and Industrial Psychology. I returned to teaching in Burnaby in 1970 and taught at most of the secondary schools until retiring in 2000. I took time out to teach at UBC after being "seconded" from Burnaby. I taught full time in the department of Mechanical and Industrial Design at BCIT after retiring from Burnaby. Carol and I have two daughters and five granddaughters who live close by. While teaching and raising a family we built a home on Burnaby Mountain. And I developed many interests and kept up many long term friendships. We also were half partners in Canatrac, international. Along the way I have designed a number of mechanical devices and have patents for them in Canada, USA, and Asia. My interests are -- grandchildren, friends, classic car restoration (we have 11 collector cars), singing and playing guitar in the Rock band "Bad Connections" of which I am a founding member when we started 39 years ago, travel, dirt bike riding, car slalom racing, Jet boating, water and snow skiing, photography, furniture design and woodworking ( have a complete woodshop in the house) stonework, auto mechanics, The Canadian Classic MG Club, Sculpting (the Viking Head at Burnaby North), conducting mechanical workshops for the Jaguar and MG club, car runs, and just hanging out with my friends. I have fond memories of the years I spent at "South" and still keep in touch with many of my friends from those good times. I always have time -when in town- to communicate with "South People". contact me if you wish. I enjoy hearing from people and I am interested in what you have been doing -- what ever it is. On April 20, 2017, My incredible wife Carol (Hooton) passed away suddenly, without warning -- we still do not know the cause. She was the most amazing person I have ever met. It has been a very tough year but I am doing alright. Take care, and remember -- it is never too late to have a happy childhood. John
