John's Story

Life John Michael O'Reagan Cook. Born San Antonio, Texas 18 February 1949. Graduated Thomas Jefferson High School, Dallas 1966. Voted "Most Anonymous” or might have been had anyone known who I was. University of Texas 1966-1971, Plan II, BA, MA, English and History. University of Washington/Trinity College Dublin 1971-1978, MAT in English, PhD in Irish History and Literature. University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio 1987-1991, MD. Assistant Professor, Department of English, University of Texas at Austin 1978-1987. Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, UT Health San Antonio. Married with two children: Patrick, born 27 July 1989, and Mary, born 6 April 1993. Residence: Leon Springs, Texas. When my brother Steve and I left for UT in 1966 our parents moved to another city. We found them eventually, but the move effectively severed our ties with Dallas, which in my mind remains frozen in the past. My travels have taken me far afield: to Germany, where I spent a summer working as a bartender on the lonely island of Heligoland in the North Sea; to Seattle and the University of Washington; to Dublin and Trinity College; to Canada to spend time ...Expand for more
with family. Rather surprisingly for a shy person, I have travelled over most of western Europe by rail, by car, and by hitchhiking. I have spent a great deal of time in Britain, especially during the years when my son was a student in England. I have been to New Zealand when my daughter was studying there, and my wife and I have joined several medical missions to Guatemala. But Dallas seems like a distant country: the house we lived in has been torn down and replaced with a McMansion; two of my schools have been destroyed by a tornado; Walnut Hill Village seems to have disappeared. All of this I learned from a Google search. I still have the yearbook from 1966. Looking through it, I note and recall something of the past. My classmates were a good-looking lot and almost invariably kind to the shy boy who was a year younger than most of them (and unfortunately also a late bloomer). I especially recall the girl who suggested that if I had asked earlier she might have agreed to be my date for the prom. From such kind gestures hope is kindled and endures. To any of you who might read this I send my best wishes and hopes for your continued health and happiness.
