John's Story
After 27 years on the job, I retired in 2003 as a Captain from the Petersburg Police Department, Petersburg, VA. Highlights of my career include 25 years of service on the department's SWAT Team and graduation from the FBI National Academy at Quantico.
After retirement, we sold our home in Chesterfield County and relocated to the retirement home we built at Lake Gaston - on the Virginia / N. Carolina border - just about 10 miles from I-85 on the Virginia side of the lake.
Almost 2 years after retirement, I was asked to come back to the department part-time for a "few months" to run the Crime Solvers program which I had installed 20 years earlier. Those "few months" stretched into well over 3 years before I pulled the plug again. Since then, I have functioned as a paid consultant - only working 3 or 4 days a month. That should be ...Expand for more
coming to an end in the near future.. Then I'll probably find something to do closer to the Lake.
My wife, Pat, (whom I met on a blind date in late 1961 when she was in nursing school at St. Vincent's Hospital in NYC with Eileen O'Rourke and Judy Metro) & I have been married for 46 years. We have 2 children and 3 grandchildren who live less than 2 hours away.
Our daughter, Bernadette, is the regional manager for a uniform rental company in Ashland, VA. She has a son Tyler, 17.
Our son, Brian, is a Lt. with the Richmond Police Department. He recently retired from their SWAT Team after 13 years of service - the last 2 as commander of the team. He has 2 daughters, Kelsey, 14 and Lyndsay, 9.
The entire family spends a lot of time here at the Lake - particularly in the summer months - for the boating and other waterbased activities.
