John's Story

Life Hi there. Living in Tampa now. I'm a Dermatologist with my own practice going on nine years. Picture taken in 1999.... I know i need a new one! Been through a lot of fun and a lot of work. Living with Lisa and her two children for 8 years. Took up golfing and having fun, travelling a bit and trying to stay in shape and stay away from the brutal Florida sun, though... Having a ball, working hard to hopefully retire early. When I got out of high school I had no idea what I wanted to do.. . so I wasted time for three years and worked oil rigs, seismic crews, picking rocks off graded fields for the City, shiftwork at MCgavin's bakery, etc.. and also learned what NOT to do (probably the best things I ever learned are those things NOT to do... In other words, I made some fairly major "mistakes" to say the least... they caused so much pain, self-doubt.... and then laughter and reflection...they have shaped my life and led me here, by accident it seems, and made me more understanding of those who fail... I was lucky.)... then... After a diploma in Engineering Science, (SAIT),working a couple of years in Engineering, then getting an Electrical Engg degree from Uof C with a computer minor, I moved from Calgary to Atlanta - Georgia Tech to do a Master's in Health Systems in '87.... then moved to Sarasota (South of Tampa) and worked in a hospital for a couple of years helping them be more efficient, before going to Medical School and residency for eight years... Worked hard to get the highest Board scores in my class, which allowed me to get into Dermatology. One thing I quickly learned at SAIT was that most V.B. grads could probably add (no exaggeration - I had to compete against all other school grads so I know their grades and how they matched up against VB grads) about 15-20% to your "average" grade at V...Expand for more
.B. and that would be about what other typical high school graduates were getting at the time of our graduation. This may have been unfortunate for some since this may have disuaded them from going to college,? or hampered their admission (though it seemed at the time it was pretty "easy" to get into SAIT or UofC - I hear that's changed?). I attribute the grade discrepancies to the relatively "disciplined" and more "difficult" system that V.B... A.E. Cross and other local elementary schools of the time had. I know that just as we left A.E. and V.B.. things started to "fall apart". I have also seen a full generation now of American high school graduates who cannot even spell.. decently.... among other things... and it isn't getting any better. My point is that I think its very important to remember, if you don't discipline your children properly, you will significantly hobble their chances of success... I see this as possibly the greatest "failure" of our generation... and I'm sure it started earlier... Everone always wants to hear about Steve... Of course.. Well, He's doing well, building fences and decks in Calgary, and does the best job around (of course!).. so if you are ever in need of a fence.. call him - he's in the Y.Ps. He has two sons from two marriages and his oldest is getting married in Cancun in April 08 - I'll be there! So now we're over thirty years out!!! Wow!!... time's flying.. we're getting old and won't be here for long... and with the stress I put up with hopefully I'll make it aother five years! I have room here for your stay if you were ever so inclined, so If you are ever in the area or going to Orlando (for Disneyworld, or whatever ) don't be afraid to let me know.. you will always have a friend here to share the wine. I'm at skinmd on the hot mail site Bye for now.. john
