John's Story

Nov 5, 2012 Here we are, nearing the end of the year (and the end of our season)... Alan Ayres stopped by to visit and share a couple of drinks over dinner... Great visit... I've talked to a few classmates, over the years, but Alan's the only one who's stopped by... surely, somebody from our class comes to Gatlinburg now and then for a vacation get-a-way... I know Howard's in Louisville, Jerry's in Fairfield Glade, and who else is close by??? come on down and say Hi... Hope to see you soon... however, if you're here in January, we'll be closed... we're heading down to the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) for a well deserved vacation... after all, 10:00 - 5:00 seven days a week is enough for anyone... Feb 5, 2012 Here it is, February, 2012. Hard to believe time has flown by quite so fast... damn, I used to think someone 70 years old was over the hill... now, I think it's just about the right place to be to start picking up speed and coasting into maturity... not too fast thought, being a kid is still fun now and then. A year ago, my partner and I (Linda is the best thing that ever happened to me), moved from the hot, dry desert of southern California, to the lush, green mountains of eastern Tennessee... we thought we wanted a great mountain view, so we rented a condo in Gatlinburg, with a perfect view of Mt. Laconte... it was a great view, and didn't bother us too much until the day we walked into the garage and confronted a 400 pound black bear who thought it would make a nice place to hang out... he finally decided he wasn't welcome and drifted back into the forest. We saw him again a half a dozen times, but he didn't come back into the garage... only to the door... In November, we purchased a new home in Sevierville, about 10 miles from our store in Gatlinburg. Oh, I forgot to mention, we have a store that caters to tourists at the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts village on Glades Road, on the 8 mile Artists & Craftsmen's loop... if you decide to come to the Great Smoky Mountains for a vacation, please stop by and say hello... We're also presented on channel 69 in the greater Gatlinburg area... check us out. Life here is certainly different than in southern California.. it's far more laid back here, and much quieter. There is no gang activity here, and consequently, no graffatti, which is a much greater relief than you might think... In california everything is covered in spray paint, and I do mean everything... buildings, stop signs, highway signs, cars, trucks, even police cars get their share of spray paint from gang-bangers... there are murders reported every day, and usually several shootings... no matter where you are, they are bound to be close by, because they occur everywhere... you almost have to live in a gated community, just to be safe. We had gotten somewhat caloused to all the gang activity going on, until we moved and di...Expand for more
scovered there was none here... wow, what a difference. Well, that's enough of an update for now. If you get to Gatlinburg, TN, we'd love to see you... stop by the store, we're open 7 days a week, from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm... and Linda calls that retirement?... oh well, we are having fun, and it pays the bills... come see us. John and Linda Devore May 21, 2005 Can you believe it's coming up on 50 years since we walked out of that hot, stuffy gym at Madison Heights... and now it's Anderson High School. That makes us the first class to ever graduate as Indians, from what is now the new Anderson High School. Sort of poetic justice, wouldn't you say. Over 500 of us signed that petition to have it happen somewhere else, but it just wasn't to be... Time goes on, and here I am, in Indio, California. I moved here after retiring from the County of San Diego. Of course, like most people, I didn't move here as a permanent relocation. It was just going to be for a few months, until I decided where I wanted to live... Well, that was six years ago, and I'm still here. Something about the desert that gets to you, and holds onto you. I never expected that, but a lot of things have happened to me that I never expected. Today, I worry about sterile tomato plants, scorched flowers, watering system timers, and staying cool. I have a little business I run from my home, that takes a couple of hours a day, and the rest of my time is just being relaxed and doing whatever seems like the right thing to do at the time. I write, I send cards to friends, I read, I watch a little TV, I love movies, and I use a good friends swimming pool, more than he and his wife do. Lucky for me, they go to the beach for the summer, and I have complete use of their pool. It even has a chiller, so the water doesn't get too hot during the 115 degree days. I know, when I read that back, it sounds pretty boring. Truth is, it's retirement at its best. I'm enjoying myself a bunch. Between SSI and my pension, I'm able to live comfortably, and not stress over the small stuff. Seems to be working for me. I've gained about 80 pounds, since I was in high school, so I look somewhat different than back in the 60's, as you can see from my pictures. July 3, 2008 That lobster was a monster. I wasn't sure if I was going to eat the lobster, or if it was going to eat me. That shot was taken at the Rosewood Grille in Las Vegas, on Sat, June 28, 2008. So you can tell how current the pic is. That's one of the perks of where I live. We have several casinos within a five mile radius, and I'm only 4 hours from Vegas. Great intertainment, year around. The casinos book in some of the best acts in the country, and they are relatively inexpensive, as compared to NYC or LA. So, good food...good entertainment... good weather... good health... good friends... what more could anyone ask for?
