John's Story

For those who want to be bored: From High school, went to USC ( South Carolina) for two years - major was Physics. Father broke his heel trying to ride my motorcycle, took over management of Service Station next to Northside Baptist Church, dropped out of school for a semester, sister in bad accident, dropped most classes to manage again. Received a draft notice. was able to delay it and tried to catch up in the time given, but 20 credits a semester in Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, English, German and Astronomy, while working 30+ hours/week was too much. Joined the Navy instead of going in the Army. After 6 years was married. After 8 years, received Honorable Discharge and several commendations working as a Fire Control Technician (electronics and mechanics controlling radars, guns and missiles). Started work as a Field Service Engineer on the first CAT Scanner installed in South Carolina. On the side, co-developed the first Energy Management System (Software) in the US - installed at the merchandise Mart in Atlanta. After 3.5 years, went to work for Digital Systems in Columbia, developing and installing Electrical Coop Software. 7 months later, went to work for Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) as a programmer, then manager, then consultant. during this time, had two wonderful children. The Lord pursued and finally made me recognize who He was and my life changed. Was laid off after 12 years (along with 80,000 others). Worked 3 years as a motel manager in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Worked 5 years as an independent systems architect, designer, programmer for Dupont in North Carolina. Plant closed no, work available for over a year. Lost house in Lexington. Marriage separation - deep depression. Developed an inkjet re-fill business with a friend in Rock Hill. Sunk everything I had into it. Was down to $4...Expand for more
00 and my car. Told God that I depended on Him and if He had nothing else planned (Ha! Ha!), I was going to start looking for work at gas stations, McDonalds, anywhere on the following Monday. Two days later, I received a call from a VP that I never knew, but had heard about me from his father-in-law. He offered me a job, on-the-spot. I spent the next seven years following God, depending on Him and growing. He then told me to retire from this great job (I was not ready - did not have what I believe was an income and savings I could retire on). Did I say follow Him? I did as He told me, but with little grace. Three months later, my mother had congestive heart failure and I was free to take care of her - what great planning! During this seven-year timeframe, was reunited with both my girls that I love most dearly, had a granddaughter that I adore. Spent the last five years, taking care of mom, realizing God supplies everything I need and then piles on more blessings! Just received a second granddaughter (via eldest daughter) that is the best baby I have EVER seen! Happy, never cries except when complaining about a wet diaper or hunger doesn't get attention. I am currently more busy than ever before... I thought retirement meant just that,,, foolish me! Bought new house for mom and I (for a while my younger daughter's family - wants to be near Dad). Remodeled Mom's 100+ year house, rented for two years, then sold it. Helping a girl (woman) I knew in high school, that had a bad traffic accident at age 28 and now has severe problems, but thanks to God, a surgeon and new living conditions, is now doing 1000% better. Teach Sunday School, just finishing remodeling my daughter's laundry room. Have four new projects that people need help with... Just know that God is good and I wish to follow Him forever!
