John's Story
College
While I was in the Marine Corps, I was able to sneek in a few night classes in business at Saddleback JC in Mission Viejo, CA in general studies and business. It was a great place for school for its diversity and costs (free). I then attended Chemeketa Community College in Salem, OR for about 2 years while I worked the graveyard shift at the Oregon State Penitentiary. What a suck job. I did enjoy the experience at CCC. It helped me get through working at the Pen. Beyond the Community College scene, I have have acquired a number of professional certifications and designations. I guess we never stop learning.
Workplace
I started out like a most guys by pumping gas at the local Towne Pump gas station in Salem, OR. After that, I worked part time for State Farm Insurance Regional office in Salem, OR while I finished my senior year in High School. After HS, I joined the Marine Corps as a Life Support Techician for the next 4 years in California. Returning back to Salem, OR after the service I worked at the Oregon State Penitentiary as a correctional officer for the next year or so. Since I did not want this to be my career, I went to college for ...Expand for more
a few years while I was working. After that, I went to work for a State Agency in Oregon as a Safety Officer, performing various Occupational Safety and workers compensation duties. I continued in this profession forthe next 15 years or so at various state of oregon agencies. After a falling out at my last agency, I changed careers to the Insurance business, where I am today. I did work for about 18 months as a captive agent for Country Insurance, but being captive was not for me. I guess I don't like to be told what to do. Who would have guessed! I started my own agency last year and currently working hard to build it up to where I would like it to be.
Military
Joined the Marine Corp in Sept of 1980. Spent 3 glorious months in San Diego, CA for basic training. After the brief vacation, I was sent to Lake Hust, NJ for training school as a Life Support Technician (6060). After school, I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Eltoro in California. I was assigned to VMFA 323 (the Death Rattlers) 80 - 84. I did participate in a number of deployments throughout the US, but I never had the opportunity to travel outside the US. Semper Fi "Hooray"
