John's Story

I was born in San Antonio and when I was young we lived at 115 Cosgrove St on the South side of town. I used to walk to Laura Steele Elementary with a couple of kids in the neighborhood but I was young for my class. Our next door neighbors in that day were the Garcia family, they had a son named Ralph and a daugther named Patty (maybe Patricia). I don't remember many kids from that day though I attended Steele until the middle of 5th Grade. That year we moved to Cheddar Dr up by the medical center and I started attending Glen Oaks Elementary. I finished up 6th grade and we moved to Midway Mass when I was 11 and my brother was 7 in 1968. I attended school in Midway for a year. We used to hang out with a number of neighborhood kids and we all played in a beautiful cemetary that was just down the road. It had a little pond that froze over every year and we would ice skate. I don't remember the names of the kids except Nicola Harrison who was in my grade. I had a crush on her in those days. She also had a little sister named Sarah. We moved to Norwood the following year and so did the Harrisons so Nicola and I continued to attend school together but they moved to Pembroke and we moved to East Brockton. I went to school there for a bit and we moved to West Brockton and I finished up Jr High and started 9th grade at the brand new Brockton High School. It was a pretty awesome school, with a planetarium and all kinds of amenities. My best friend in those days was Cary Gottschalk, but I used to also hang around with Cindy Emberg who I was madly in love with at age 12 and 13. Dad wasn't happy with his company at the time because he got passed over for a promotion so he quit and went to work for a company in Houston, Tx. We lived on Moody St and I attended Sam Houston High School. That year my dad was killed by an unknown gunman and my family returned to San Antonio. We ended up living on the West side near one of my Aunts. Mom bought a little house on Arteago st and started a little business called Lupita's Ice House. During that time I attended Kennedy...Expand for more
HS and my best friends were Daniel Arismendez and Richard Martinez. Mom ended up buying another house on the south side of San Antonio on Zapata st. It was an older house but we lived there while I attended San Antonio College. During that time my brother and I made friends with a group of kids on Eads Ave. Dawn and Doris Brau and Ella (Sister) Cavazos. I continued to see my friends Danny and Richard, but Richard was in a car accident and passed away and Danny got married and we lost touch. In 1980 I joined the USAF and spent a year at Lowry AFB for Tech School and made friends with John Kim and Michael S. Fields. We used to play Dungeons and Dragons every night after tech school and had a blast! When I got my first assignment it was to Patrick AFB and that is where I met my wife Tami. We dated for a little while and got married and went to Australia for a two year tour of duty. Our first son Michael was born while we lived in Alice Springs Australia. After that tour, I returned to Patrick AFB and decided to separate from the USAF. I ended up back in San Antonio and we bought a little mobile home and lived on a lot that my Mother had given to us. Tami was pregnant with Sarah when I separated from the USAF and she was born in San Antonio, then we had Daniel. I was working for San Antonio Savings Association at that time and not making much money but my boss O.L. Tripp was trying to help me get more money since I was developing lots of software and being underpaid for the work I was doing. In 1990 I was contacted by a headhunter working for EDS and I was offered more money to move to Plano, Tx and work for EDS. I stayed with them nearly 8 years. Made a good friend named Ken Zotigh who worked with me. Eventually I got tired of Plano (Luke and David were born about the time I started working for EDS) and we moved to Austin. I was contacted by a headhunter and offered a job at BMC Software for considerably more money that I was being paid at EDS. We bought our first house in the hill country and have been here for 12 years. That's about it for now.
