John A.'s Story
I was born and raised in a small, poor family in Las Vegas, New Mexico (not Nevada as students try to correct me when I share this info). In a brief meeting just before our high school graduation, our high school counselor asked me my plans after graduation. I told him that my Mom wanted me to attend our local university, He told me that this would not be a good plan and continued with the following short speech and advice:: "You are not smart enough to go to college---you will probably be embarrassed and humiliated when college classmates realize you do not know much at all. You should probably go to our local vocational school and settle for a certificate in some field where you can at least make a small wage and eventually settle down. And, by the way, you hang out with the wrong crowd who will also get nowhere in life. If you don't take my advice, I guarantee that you will never amount to much and probably and up being a hoodlum for the rest of your life." hlands University with a double B.A. and also an M.A. in Education (1982). Then, I left there and traveled to Cambridge, MA after being accepted to Harvard University---I attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and completed my degrees in Reading (Ed.M.) and Specialization in Reading. I finished my doctoral coursework and passed my Written and Oral Comps (doctoral exams) at New Mexico State University in Community College Administration. I realized early on that I belonged in the classroom as a teacher and have spent 35+ years teaching as a professor, with a stellar reputation, at several colleges and universities. It would be nice to connect with friends and classmates from the past. I am currently single---previously divorced and raised two step children (son and daughter).. I am a published author and have completed & published eleven college textbooks or books---I just finished my novel: "A Hoodlum At Harvard" which I hope will be published soon. Finally, I will probably continue teaching until I give my last research + paper assignment and then take my last breath on earth---I know that and my students know that! Adios for now....................
