John's Story
Life
Right after graduation in 1972, I joined the Air Force and stayed for a 20 year career. In 1973, I married my high school sweetheart, Dorothy (who lived and went to school in El Monte). We're still married today, after 33 years. We have a daughter Sarah who was born in 1987 in Sacramento. We currently live in Fort Worth. We've been here since 1991.
Even though I was quite the "liberal" in my high school days, today I'd call myself a moderate conservative.
My hobbies and interests include: motorcycling...I've ridden motorcycles all my life and have owned everything from a Honda 90 to a Harley Fatboy. Bicycling...I ride mostly recumbents but I have a conventional bike as well. Reading...I love to read. My favorite authors are Crichton, Lincoln&Child, Dan Brown...to name a few. Fishing and RC flying, although I haven't done much of either in the last few years.
College
I completed a bachelor's degree in computer science in 1987 and a master's in software engineering in 1990 while on active duty in the Air Force.
Workplace
I'm currently employed by the University of California at Santa Cruz even though I live and work in Texas. I actually work for a NASA field research station in Fort Worth working on FAA software developme...Expand for more
nt. My job title is Senior Information Systems Specialist, but basically wear many different hats.
Military
Joined the Air Force in 1972 and was trained as a medical lab tech. I was stationed at Edwards AFB in the Mojave desert in 1973. In 1978, I cross trained into the weather field as an observer, forecaster and solar analyst. I was stationed Hickam AFB on Ohau, HI where I worked as a weather forecaster. I also worked at Palehua Solar observatory on Ohau for 3 years. in 1987, I was stationed at Mather AFB in CA and stayed there until 1991 working as a weather forecaster. In 91 I was stationed at Carswell AFB in TX, where I became the NCOIC of a weather software programming office. I retired from the Air Force in 1993 and stayed in Texas.
05/5/10
My wife of 36 years, Dorothy passed away on 09/2/09. She had a liver transplant in 1991 and by far outlived the life expectancy of a transplant patient. The liver she received in 1991 began failing in 2005 and she struggled with a whole host of problems directly and indirectly related to the liver. She was one of the bravest, kindest, and most beautiful souls I have ever met in my whole life. She was loved by everyone she ever came in contact with. I will always love and miss her.
